College is Tough

14 Aug

I listen with awe every time when we Skype with M1 on how she’s doing. Paper after paper to write, little quizzes here and there, meetings with TAs (Teaching Assistants) when necessary and group work efforts. I could never do what she’s doing.

I don’t recall my workload during my college days to be such. But then again, it could be the major that I was pursuing versus what she’s taking now, Graphic Design versus declared Food Science & Technology.

I remember my Typography class where the professor would come into the class for just ten minutes or so. He would mumble some project to the class and then disappear into his office to smoke his cigar, leaving the classroom of students to their antics. Some students would leave, others would just chatter. I was diligent, sat there with my headphones in place and did the work though.

I also remember sauntering into Design class on time but leaving early, informing my professor I had to go home to watch my soap opera, Days of Our Lives, before my scheduled work slot at the bookstore.

Ahh… Those were the days. I never had that many papers to write nor did I ever met up with any TAs. And what’s this clicker thing that they use nowadays? Maybe times have changed. I seriously think if I ever went back to college, I would fail miserably.

The workload would be too much. So I am very pleased that M1 is coping well and holding up okay at university. Summer classes ends today and she flies off for a well-deserved break, heading two states away to spend some time with my girlfriend who lives there.

Feeling Incomplete

13 Aug

Although I hardly use my laptop for work, I feel incomplete. Every morning when I have my coffee, I would launch my laptop to read the news, go into Farm Heroes especially to collect my daily awarded beans (something I can’t do on the iPad) and play Level 1101 of Candy Crush because the game has yet to update for the iPad. Now I can’t do any of these because my laptop is not back yet.

A friend sympathized with me and reasoned that if my laptop went in to be resurrected, it should just take three days. I am not convinced. It definitely isn’t a situation of biblical proportions; furthermore, it went in on a Sunday and not a Friday, you know what I mean?

Thank goodness Candy Crush Soda updated for the iPad by Tuesday night, so I had my candy fix back. But still, I feel agitated and incomplete. By Wednesday night, Candy Crush finally updated for the iPad but I have been stuck at Level 1101 for sometime now, feeling incomplete suddenly becomes inept! I can play yet I can’t play. Aargh…

Anyway, Apple did not call on Wednesday but emailed a quotation over for the repair cost. I almost fell off my chair! It will cost a third of a brand new MacBook Air if I went ahead with the repair. This is the first time one of my Apple devices is causing so much grieve.

Now, on top of feeling incomplete (and inept) I am upset too. Hrmph.

A Break in Routine

11 Aug

I must admit this week I am not taking off during the work week to go play golf. Yea… a break in routine considering that we did that for three weeks in a row, taking a Friday, then a Thursday and then a Wednesday off.

And does Saturday count for this week? We squeezed in one game before doing the weekly Saturday night dinner with Mom and M2.

Be Sad and Eat Oats

10 Aug

Sunday morning my laptop died. It can’t turn on. My MacBook Air. Gone. Kaput. I was not in the least upset but more worried that I could not play my games! Aargh…

Hubby declared, “Do not touch my laptop!” killing off any hopes of using his device to play my games.

Oh dear. What should I do?

We googled up tips and tried everything possible to resuscitate my laptop but to no avail. The laptop just cannot turn on after I shut it down the night before (instead of putting it to sleep).

So after lunch, we went to the mall and sent it in to Apple for service and was advised to leave it for two days. Two days without my laptop. How to progress for my Candy Crush and Candy Crush Soda? The two games that I now have no choice but to play on the laptop because there’s no updates yet for my iPad.

I felt miserable thinking about my options. And wanted to buy something, anything to drown my sadness.

Walking pass every shop and retailer, I itched to buy the travel bag, eat gelato, buy a Thermos flask (I already have two) and drink Starbucks or a juice, an impulse reaction at being a loss.

When we walked into the pharmacy, M2 pointed to the oats on the shelf and suggested I “be sad and eat oats”. Cheeky girl, goading me on.

Boo hoo hoo…

I hope the laptop will be fine.

We ended up eating a choc vanilla waffle and drank a Starbucks frappuccino.

Not in Synch

7 Aug

I stopped playing Candy Crush Soda for a few days because there has been no updates. But last night, I could not resist and peeked into the game in Facebook on the laptop. What do you know? I moved. Yay… so I played on and managed to progress to Level 452.

However, on the iPad, despite achieving a star for Level 451, the icon is grey and while my avatar is sitting at Level 452, its icon is also grey. Something is not right. Obviously grey means I can’t play on the iPad. Hrmph.

It looks like the game is not in synch for different devices when clearly I have progressed in one device (laptop) but it’s not showing in the other (iPad).

King.com had better fix this.

As for Candy Crush, Bubblegum Hut finally opened for the iPad and I leapfrogged to the end of the chapter. And just as I predicted, I cannot play because I have actually gone on to the next chapter. Sigh…

On the iPad, 451 & 452 are grey

in Facebook, 451 & 452 are colored!

Catching Up

6 Aug

As I was leaving the house this morning, I bumped into my old neighbor who happened to come by to supervise the cleaning up of her now vacated home. She informed me that she will be getting new tenants and I am glad because it’s been too quiet. It was good to catch up and compare notes on our children and life in general.

Who knows? Maybe the new neighbor will have a couple of cockatoos and a dog? We will find out in two weeks’ time.

To the Dentist, Part 2

4 Aug

So I went to the dentist. It was bad, the outcome of the visit. There is a hairline crack on my first premolar on the top right! And this is far worst than an outright chip or a dislodged filling. The little piece of cement that I initially thought was the filling that came out was actually my tooth.

The impact of the bite caused the gum to swell and there is a hairline crack right down the middle. Oh dear. How deep, he could not tell. So for now, he removed the old filling and patched it up. We see how I feel the next few days.

If the swelling subsides and no further pain, then the tooth is safe, meaning the crack is not that deep. But if the pain persists, we have no choice but to extract because with the crack right down the middle, the tooth is weakened and any patch job ain’t gonna help. It has been determined also that it is not a nerve problem that can be resolved to save the tooth.

The other tooth, the molar on the bottom left is okay. A simple patch job without any issues. I’d better be good and take my meds as prescribed and pray hard I don’t lose a tooth.

To the Dentist

4 Aug

I need to see a dentist to fix a filling that fell out when I was munching on a club sandwich last week. This is the second incident of me chewing on bread that caused my tooth filling to come loose and this time, it hurts.

Thinking of visiting the dentist brought back memories of when I first went off to college and then developed a tooth problem. My wisdom tooth was acting up and it came to the point of no rescue. I had no choice but to visit the dentist to confirm this.

It had to be extracted. But at an exorbitant cost. Seven hundred dollars, I remember. Sounds very expensive then. I called home and discussed with Mom and Dad.

In the end, I flew home that summer, my flight ticket costing a hundred more than the tooth extraction cost and had my wisdom tooth pulled out at a fraction of it.

As for my current problem, I see the dentist later today.

Not Fun Anymore

3 Aug

It certainly is not fun anymore when I find myself still stuck at Level 776 of Farm Heroes and caught in a time freeze at Level 1085 of Cloudberry Creek in Candy Crush on my iPad. I have actually gone passed the next chapter, Bubblegum Hut and started the subsequent chapter Pastry Palace (Level 1101) in Facebook on the laptop.

I suspect even with an update, usually one chapter at a time, I may not be able to play on my iPad because I am two chapters ahead of Cloudberry! Too fast for my own good.

To add to the aggravation, I can’t go forth beyond Level 450 for Candy Crush Soda on both my iPad and laptop.

Hrmph. Better to go back to reading Genghis Khan.

Goodbye

31 Jul

Our neighbor has moved. After a year renting the house next door, the family has gone back to their home country, England and it’s been very quiet the last two days.

Every now and then, their ever curious black and white cat would coolly saunter into our living room because we always leave the back door open at the terrace. The other prima donna cat stays indoors so we hardly see it. Then there’s the beagle, Jasper. He would look at us forlornly whenever he’s out and sees us playing with our dog, Rooney, in our back garden. Poor Jasper, he looks as though he lacks playtime and a play mate.

Our favorites are the cockatoos. Every morning, we can hear their chirps and chatter and every evening, when we come home, they would greet us ‘Hello…’. Sometimes they even amuse by calling out ‘Jasper…’ or imitating their masters.

The last two mornings when I awoke, silence. No birds chirping, no truck engine revving up nor the occasional whine from the pooch. I’m not used to it!

Goodbye my feathered friends and fur balls. Have a good life. We will definitely miss you (more than your masters).
