The Gnome’s Home

21 Aug

Over the weekend, I had a really good opportunity to work on the two-piece Meranti block. After sending M2 to school for her activity early in the morning, I came home and set up the carving station. Initially I thought of warming up by carving a Citizen but changed my mind and dived into the Meranti at 8.00am, early by my standards.

Two hours later, I nicked my finger for the third time but it did not deter me. I had my warm green tea in the Thermos, the weather was lovely and although official pet number one was snoring away by my side, the focus was not disturbed by his loud snore.

Another two hours went by and I nicked my finger again! Dang… either the Meranti is too hard or I am not doing it right. I have not nicked myself so many times in one carving. Then again, it’s been a while since I started on a new shape/character, what more on a Meranti.

Eight hours later, the Gnome’s home was done. I was pleased with my efforts but suffered the consequences soon after, not just with the four cuts on my index finger.

The third and fourth cut. Ouch

The right tennis elbow flared up and the left hand was sore at the thumb and wrist. The left index finger throbbed from the fourth cut and the strangest thing, the fingers of my right hand tingled at the tips, a sensation I’ve never experienced before. It became more pronounced when I typed on the phone. And this sensation lasted six hours passed the carving.

Have I pushed myself too far this time? Then I looked at my end result, the Gnome’s home, and all that pain was forgotten.

Brand Loyalist

25 Oct

I am a brand loyalist I must say. If I buy a product of a particular brand and like it, I will continue to buy it as long as I have a need and use for it. Like my handbags for example. It has to be Salvatore Ferragamo. Different sizes and shapes for different occasions, all my handbags–save for one Furla–and two pairs of shoes are Ferragamo. Brand loyalist. Let’s not even go into the other stuff…

Recently the loyalty in me acquired yet another Thermos to my collection! There’s already five flasks (six if M1’s unit is also counted) of different sizes and there I was purchasing another.

It could have been a simple thing but I suddenly needed my coffee to be always hot. So a sipper lid was required. But I didn’t fancy having to use my flask every morning for my coffee because the flip-top is too tedious to flip plus the flask does not have a handle like a mug. And frankly with this criteria, there are not many choices out there, that’s why I ended up with yet another Thermos product.

The purchase was a mug, the ThermoCafe serving this different need. And I love it.

The Truth of the Matter

10 Sep

As you know, I have a recent obsession with the Thermos brand flask. Not too long ago, I requested hubby to redeem his credit card points for the red 600ml flask from the catalog. And he did. And I have been using my flask for my drinks, warm tea during Sunday afternoons and cold drinks during my golf games. I love it.

As it was very useful, I insisted that he should redeem another one but for himself. And he did.

Then I realized with the size at 600ml, it’s too large for my coffee (because it’s way too much coffee but it’s fine for tea). Furthermore at this size, the flask is too long to tip over to sip a cuppa’s worth of the hot brew. I am a creature of habit; I like my coffee hot and my tea warm. I have scalded my tongue several times when I tipped the flask too fast.

So what did I do? I went and bought a slim 300ml flask specifically for hot coffee and it worked out fine. The big flask remained for warm tea or cold drinks while the small flask for hot coffee.

But guess what?

After several uses, hubby complained that his black 600ml Thermos was not suitable for his hot drinks! Ah hah. It wasn’t just me who faced this scalding problem! So what did we do? We decided to redeem another flask albeit a smaller volume one. And he’s been using the slimmer 400ml flask and M2 inherited the 600ml flask.

The flask ownership worked out fine until last weekend. We went to the mall and obsession got the better of me and I bought yet another flask! This time, the 350ml size Thermos, slightly bigger in capacity than the 300ml one but shorter – it’s the one I was eyeing from the last encounter with it.

I love my new blue flask as it’s very cute. Yes cute. And since I now have two mini ones, I decided to give hubby my other slim 300ml flask so that he can drink his hot coffee without scalding his tongue too.

So yeah, we now have five Thermos flasks at home and one in college with M1. Unbelievable.

Love at First Sight

8 Sep

The curvaceous lines of the body made me want to caress it longingly. The size was irresistible plus the height and shape was just right. I could not resist, it was love at first sight.

The new 350ml baby blue Thermos flask beckoned me. I had to buy it.

This was a few weeks back when we were at the mall and we happened to walk pass the Thermos display. Hubby and M2 rolled their eyes at me. We already have four Thermos flasks at home, why do we need another one?

Somehow they managed to pull me away from the lure. But on Sunday, when we went to the mall, I brought up the subject again.

Amazingly, they allowed me to go buy my flask! Oooh… I am in heaven. I went off quickly in case they changed their mind.

So now there’s five Thermos flasks at home. Oh, it slipped my mind, we actually have six but the 500ml one went off to college with M1. Is this an obsession?

Be Sad and Eat Oats

10 Aug

Sunday morning my laptop died. It can’t turn on. My MacBook Air. Gone. Kaput. I was not in the least upset but more worried that I could not play my games! Aargh…

Hubby declared, “Do not touch my laptop!” killing off any hopes of using his device to play my games.

Oh dear. What should I do?

We googled up tips and tried everything possible to resuscitate my laptop but to no avail. The laptop just cannot turn on after I shut it down the night before (instead of putting it to sleep).

So after lunch, we went to the mall and sent it in to Apple for service and was advised to leave it for two days. Two days without my laptop. How to progress for my Candy Crush and Candy Crush Soda? The two games that I now have no choice but to play on the laptop because there’s no updates yet for my iPad.

I felt miserable thinking about my options. And wanted to buy something, anything to drown my sadness.

Walking pass every shop and retailer, I itched to buy the travel bag, eat gelato, buy a Thermos flask (I already have two) and drink Starbucks or a juice, an impulse reaction at being a loss.

When we walked into the pharmacy, M2 pointed to the oats on the shelf and suggested I “be sad and eat oats”. Cheeky girl, goading me on.

Boo hoo hoo…

I hope the laptop will be fine.

We ended up eating a choc vanilla waffle and drank a Starbucks frappuccino.
