Half a Football Fan

19 Dec

The 2022 FIFA World Cup just concluded with the final match last night. I am not a football fan and did not follow nor watch any of the games the past month.

With Argentina prevailing to be the champion this year, it brought back memories of me being a fan decades ago. It was when Argentina won that year in 1986. And the rave then was, of course, the maestro Diego Maradona. I think I was using the World Cup fever as an excuse not to study for my exams! Hahaha.

I remember I had kept newspaper clippings of the great Maradona, but after the 1986 World Cup ended, so did my interest in the game. And Argentina has not won any further World Cup trophies until this year.

So I watched the highlights of the Final match this morning on my iPad Mini, and it was indeed thrilling. Will it revive my interest in the game? Am I a Lionel Messi fan? Hmm, good question.

Nonetheless, a toast to Argentina for their victory! France can also hold their heads high for giving the world such a high adrenalin-packed World Cup Finals.

Wave Mom, Wave

11 Jan

When M1 was still around years ago, both girls had the habit of tuning us out with their headphones on especially during exam week. Typically after dinner, both M1 and M2 would be diligently doing their revision at the dining table with their headphones in place.

It was hard enough for me when they’d do the same in the car, headphones in place and I have to wave to get their attention before speaking. It’s the same at home with this habit of theirs to tune me out and I have to wave.

With M1 away at University and only M2 around, she continued to have her headphones plugged in especially during exam week. And she constantly reminded me that I’d have to wave if I want to say something to her. Can I fault her when doing this was for a good cause, studying for the exams?

M2 may be done with school this year, so no more studying at the dining table but she still has her headphones in place these days to watch her videos instead.

The situation may have changed but some things never change and I will surely miss this habit, waving that is, the day she leaves for college.

Two More to Go

27 Nov

M2’s SPM exam feels like an eternity even for us! Thank goodness, she is almost at the tail end of it. There’s one subject today, two more subjects to go and then we are so done with it.

M2 is managing well, so are we. I think the three of us deserve a little break once the final paper is finished next week.

Yet Another Public Holiday

20 Nov

Malaysia is known to have a lot of public holidays. Sometimes it’s nice but sometimes it can also be disruptive, depending on one’s workflow or timetable. Yes, today is a public holiday in the midst of being busy and having a big exam.

For us, it’s disruptive because we are busy. But for M2, it’s a welcome breather allowing her an extra day to do more preparation.

Well, we can’t fight it so we make use of it. It will be a day of carving for me of course. I have completed the second phone holder whale and have two more blocks in the pipeline to continue for this range.

Only left with the varnishing step

Two blocks coming up soon!

Let the Exams Begin

13 Nov

Today M2 will sit for her BIG exam – the SPM with the first subject in the morning. This is her final year in high school and all the hard work comes down to this moment.

A month long duration, we will have to endure the anxiety and give her as much moral support as possible. Over the months, she had taken over the dining table with all the revision books and notes, working hard and very much dedicated in her efforts.

All the best, my dear M2; we know you can do it. Let the exams begin!

Need to Getaway

6 Nov

Maybe I need to get away from the usual routine and life. Stay away from golf and carving, and take out that bikini to wear to even out all the uneven golf tan lines.

I saw a sports doctor yesterday to evaluate the wrist. Thankfully it’s not what I thought initially – Avulsion Fracture and no necessity for an X-ray or MRI. Rather it’s a case of De Quervain’s stenosing tenosynovitis, inflammation of the tissue on the thumb side of the wrist. Commonly known as Wrist Tendinitis, it is due to overuse.

On top of over usage, it seems that Tendinitis is part and parcel with age, being the dinosaur that I am. Gee, as if I don’t have enough problems already what with the Infectious Collitis and Endometriosis diagnosed earlier in the year. I’m such a problematic dinosaur this year.

But with the weather so wonky these days and M2’s big exam looming closer each day, will we have time for a much needed escapade? Frankly, I don’t think it will be enjoyable with constant wet weather nor will there be ease of mind knowing what’s ahead for her.

It’s a good thing that today’s a public holiday and I am home taking a mini break as recommended by the doctor.

What Are the Girls Up To

26 Jun

The school holidays have ended and M2 is back in school. During the two weeks, we didn’t do much except for that two day-trip excursions. And although on break, M2 would still go to school for cheer practice when we went to the office. It became a routine albeit a short one and not too cumbersome.

As for M1, she has finished her Junior year at University and is now having her Summer holidays. She has opted not to come home though but to work for her Professor at the Lab on campus instead. It will be a good experience. Come Fall, M1 will start her Senior year and M2 will be in the final stages of preparation for the year-end big exam.

Dang… they grow up so fast.

The School Holidays are Here

19 Mar

The week long school holidays are here and M2 is getting no rest. She will be busy with activities and having replacement classes in school on top of doing her revision at home. As such, we are staying put. It’s okay though because there’s so much to do with so much wood available.

We may indulge her with an occasional dinner outside instead of the usual home-cooked meals or we may even catch a movie, just to give her a little break from all that studying.

Exam Week, Part 2

23 Oct

The exams continue this week for M2 after the week long break. I must say she diligently did her revision throughout the week although we took a break on Wednesday to go watch a movie. Only because it was a public holiday and we were off.

Hopefully all that effort will pay off. All the best M2!

Exam Week

9 Oct

How fast time flies! It is October already and exam week for M2 or should I say, exam month! It started last week and she has just about three week’s of exams to face.

Thank goodness next week is a break because of the Deepavali holidays but soon after, the exams continue. So much to study, my goodness.

I don’t recall such a lengthy stretch for exams during my high school days. College exams certainly wasn’t that long; it depended on how many subjects one would take and normally within a week.

Well, we will be study police of sorts sitting with her every evening to give her the moral support that she needs. All the best M2!
