100 Balls Later

31 Jul

Last Friday, I went to the driving range, determined to fix my shank problem. And thank goodness I did it, and the problem was identified and resolved. I was fortunate because a friend was there and assisted me immediately. If I had not bumped into him at the driving range, I would still be wondering what to do and unsure where to begin.

I hit a ball to let him assess my problem; he said I was not extending my arms enough and not squaring my club face with the ball. So when I hit the ball, my arms had this coil-back effect, and the ball contacted the heel of the club instead, resulting in the ball going right.

Once I fixed these issues, the approach shots were much better. In summary, 100 balls later, the overall swing, body balance, ball contact, and ball flight were all good. Yay, I’m a happy golfer.

A New Struggle

28 Jul

Lately, my golf game has been on a downtrend, and it is disheartening despite playing for so many years now. I have been facing a new struggle – the approach shots with my short irons. Something is incorrect somehow, and this causes me to strike the ball wrong. Not once or twice, but all the time. Sigh.

I keep shanking my shots! Like yesterday, I had four instances approaching the green when this happened. I couldn’t be more peeved with myself. The worse part – I cannot figure out my problem to resolve it. Is it my stance, downswing, alignment, or something else? There are so many variables, making it a new struggle.

The tee-offs, second shots with the woods or hybrids, short games, and putting are all fine except this. Perhaps a few trips to the driving range to correct this rather than trying to figure it out mentally? Otherwise, I am confusing myself and continue with my struggle. I should make an effort to fix this soon.

To Craft or Not to Craft

25 Jul

Now that I have completed DIY project number 30, it is starting to collect dust (!) because I left it on the dining table. I am in a bind. Do I begin the next one or not? There is no space in the Ikea display cabinet to fit in another set this size. And I don’t have any spare dust covers to protect the completed kit from dust.

Perhaps I should pause my crafting because, just about every other day, I am at the golf course. So any crafting momentum would be slow and not smooth at all.

If I start and crafting is going slow, incomplete pieces will only collect dust at my workstation. It doesn’t have to be a predicament to craft or not, but it is. Sigh.

Design for a Charitable Cause

24 Jul

I was busy being a graphic designer for the past few weeks, not for office work but for a charitable cause. It is a nice feeling when one can assist in any way for charity. So, my part was doing all the design work to promote the charity golf event. Our mission was to raise funds to ease the financial burden of an employee of our golf club due to unexpected medical expenses.

I am proud to say the response was overwhelming, for 124 golfers came together for a round of golf and contributed in their generous ways. We managed to surpass and double the intended target amount.

A salute to the organizing chairperson who mooted this idea and the team for their passion and hard work in organizing a successful fundraising event!

Break in Momentum

21 Jul

Public holidays are always a welcome occasion! We had a public holiday in the middle of the week. A break in momentum from golf, work, and routine, so hubby and I took in a movie which was a welcomed change.

So far, it is the only break for July; the next public holiday is at the end of August. Perhaps another movie during that time? Hmm.

Back and Forth

18 Jul

The golf game has been up and down for various reasons. I had a fungal infection on my fingers two weeks ago, affecting my nerves; it was not a pleasant sensation. I could not feel anything on my index and third fingers of my left hand.

The infection stems from my moist golf gloves because I hardly wash them after my games. How could I when I had so many games lined up? Well, now I know I should clean the gloves of unwanted yucks.

So the putting and gripping of all my clubs were affected by my medical problem. Thankfully, I had some antibiotic cream to apply, and resolved the predicament. These days, I don’t wear my gloves to golf as I can do without them just fine, thus reducing the chances of another infection.

In the meantime, I reverted to my TaylorMade Spider Mini putter because the Scotty was making too many errors. When I did 37 putts, I knew it was time to change. And thus, the back and forth with the putters. When will I master the skill of putting? Sigh.

My fingers are recovering, and the last two golf outing results were much better, as is putting. Another lesson learned here: always air the golf gloves or wash and rotate them more often; otherwise, you may face the problem I encountered with icky gloves.

DIY Project #30, Part 2

17 Jul

I completed DIY project number 30 over the weekend! Despite taking a week off from it because I was busy playing golf, it was good-paced enjoyment and a pleasant experience compared to all my previous sets.

A super fun build
DIY project number 30

I did not encounter any frustrating moments and did not have glue stuck on my fingers. My biggest challenge now is to find a place to display it, as the set did not come with a dust cover. Looking at my Ikea display cabinet, there is hardly any space left, unfortunately. So I may have to swap things around to make room for it. We shall see.

I will take a break from building miniatures before deciding on project number 31.

A Little Scare

14 Jul

It is natural when we get attached to our collection of knick-knacks and things for sentimental reasons. My golf accessories are no less. I’ve come to love my set of doggy covers for my driver, woods, and utility clubs. Last Tuesday, I almost lost the doggy cover for my utility four. Man, I was frantic!

After the game, I headed towards the car and was loading up. That was when I realized number 4 was missing! Oh no, where did I drop it? Visibly upset, I sped off in the buggy to the last hole, Hole 9, thinking it may have fallen around that path as I was fussing with my things then. Alas, it was not there. Boo hoo hoo.

I headed to Hole 18 instead, and it was not there either. My mind was racing, and already thinking I may have to buy a replacement. Sadness engulfed me.

I drove the buggy back to the car park and saw a fellow golfer who offered some kind words to comfort me for my loss. I thanked him, but a lump on the road caught my eye! Could it be…?

So I drove past him, and lo and behold, was my beloved number four sprawled on the road! It must have fallen off the clubhead when I hit the road hump a tad too fast as I was heading towards the car. An eye popped out, and the fur was a little ruffled, but it was okay and safe. Phew.

Right eye glued back, left eye a little scratched but safe.

Lesson learned – upon covering the clubs, remember to zip up the golf bag and never drive too fast on the road, as the road humps may cause something to fall off.

Up and Down, Part 2

11 Jul

I have figured out the reasons for my recent up-and-down trend. Firstly, I picked up a new injury! Silly me, how could I overlook this? I have had plantar fasciitis on my right foot for the past few months.

I will be fine if I play at courses that allow buggies on the fairways because I can minimize walking. Sadly, this is not often, and my foot hurts to high heaven even before completing the game. Ouch, indeed.

Secondly, the wedges that I have in the golf bag. I took out my Cleveland CBX2 52-degree wedge and had a Cleveland Smart Sole 50-degree Gap wedge instead for the last few games. Because of the swap, the short game has not been very sharp. You could say I wasn’t used to the Gap wedge.

Well, I put the 52-wedge back for the buggy-on-course game this morning. And I am pleased with the outcome because the short game improved. Also, being buggy on the course, my foot pain was manageable because I walked less.

I need to be more aware and know where the problem lies. Once I can manage the situation well, be it my short game or physical pain, the up-and-down trend should be a thing of the past.

Up and Down

10 Jul

My golf game has been up and down. It’s on a downtrend lately, and not because of putting. And sadly, my weight has been on an uptrend! What is going on?

I need to fix this alarming pattern. The weight must go down, and the game must improve. Play more, eat and drink less!
