Taking a Break

11 Oct

The last few days has been a madcap rush as hubby and I are wrapping up work so that we can go away for a much needed break.

Wait a minute! Didn’t we go for a break recently (to Paris)? Yes and no. I went for a break visiting museums, he went for work visiting the business partner. So this time we are both taking a break.

But we are not going alone; the creative team from the office are coming along. It’s our annual company trip and we all deserve it!

It’s timely to take a break from overload, from work, from stress, from life and all else will or may be put on hold. Yes, even taking a break from Candy Crush. And Zookeeper Battle. And minding the children, and….

Stay tuned.

They Eat What We Eat

27 Sep

Children, from young, should be taught to eat what we eat. I am a big advocate for this. This works out well when the whole family travels or even just go out for meals. We have salads, they will have salads, we eat a burger, so do they, you get my drift?

No such thing as we eat a burger but the young ones have a specially brewed porridge in a hot flask. Maybe this is practiced when they are babies but not when they are older…

Both my girls enjoy food. While hubby and I are no major foodie connoisseurs, we do enjoy trying out new things every now and then. Both M1 and M2 takes pride in keeping pace with us.

I am proud to say when we did our “Great Adventure Road Trip to USA” last year, food was thoroughly enjoyed and no issues at all.

We Don’t Like Shopping

24 Sep

Unlike other female species, I am considered an unusual one for I don’t like shopping. Put me in a mall for three hours or more, browsing through things or whatever, I find it quite an ordeal. Breathing becomes difficult as I always argue it is the lack of oxygen with so many people inside the enclosed building that causes this discomfort. And walking becomes taxing when the lack of oxygen kicks in, causing pain in the joints and legs.

Really strange coming from someone who can traverse almost halfway around the globe and walk 8km throughout the city of Paris or about 6km to 8km on a golf course anytime!

So when it comes to shopping, thankfully, my girls are like me and share the same sentiments on the breathing and walking issues. We hardly go shopping and will only do so if necessary.

Damn the Floor

Holiday resorts are fun places to be. They are your temporary home for the next few days when you go on vacation.

A typical garden view room

Over the years, we’ve traveled to many and afar. And I noticed over the years, beach resorts have evolved from carpeted floors to tiled floors. I guess this makes sense for keeping the maintenance cost down. Imagine the wrath of an angry holiday maker the management has to deal with, if the carpet was stale smelling with salt/chlorine water or full of sand in its plush state to irritate the naked toes.

Last weekend, hubby and I decided to escape from the children and do what we enjoy most: play golf. We drove out of town to this beach resort that offered an attractive golf and spa package. So three rounds of golf we played and 2 spa sessions we enjoyed, besides the cheap seafood.

Image

Thank goodness we didn’t have to cross the water on this Par 4.

Image

We had steamed fish. Very fresh!

But the pleasant outing had an ugly accident by the second night. We came back from a great seafood dinner and hubby dropped his phone in the hotel room! It landed on the damn tiled floor and the screen of his Google Nexus smartphone cracked. Ouch. The damage was intense, the pain of the damage even more so.

Image

My heart bled for the phone too….

Now, if there was carpet, the damage would be minimal and not so painful. But no, it was tiles, hard tiles that totally did the phone in.

So now, holiday resorts are not that fun anymore…

Oops! It’s Not THE Anniversary?!

30 Aug

The wedding anniversary is coming up soon and it reminds me of us bungling the numbers. The hubby and I have been married for donkey years and sometimes we lose track of it. Four years ago, when it was actually our 14th anniversary, he got the math wrong and thought it was our 15th anniversary; so he made plans for a great romantic escapade to Italy. In the midst of the excitement, I got my math wrong too and thought, yeah, 15 is a great milestone to celebrate, and in Italy…. Hmm. How sweet!

So off to Italy we went on just a two-to-go adventure covering Rome, Venice, Florence and back to Rome for a 12-day getaway. It was after we returned, blissed and happy that he realized that he got the math wrong on the anniversary milestone! Oops. But I wasn’t complaining!

The following year, 2010 was the actual 15th anniversary which I pointed out to him that year. It was definitely the correct anniversary milestone after the screw up the year before. As we can’t be celebrating the 14th again, we can celebrate the 15th, absurd as it sounds in the rationale.

So another trip to celebrate the occasion!

In less than 48 hours and on spontaneity once we decided where, he booked us on the (then) all new A380 SQ flight to Sydney and we spent 6 glorious days there. He made it all the more special with our stay at the Four Seasons Hotel with a fantastic view of the Sydney Opera House! We even climbed the Harbour Bridge to mark the momentous occasion. Best getaway ever.

I guess we will have to wait another two years to celebrate the significant 20th milestone. After all, like I told M1 and M2 before, any number other than significant numbers (5, 10, 15, etc) for birthdays does not qualify to be celebrated with a big party. So same applies to wedding anniversaries, unless of course, you get the math wrong unintentionally. Maybe it is safer to just say “Happy anniversary!” instead of “Happy 18th anniversary!”

Sometimes it’s not the destination but the journey, cliche as it may be, but we have so far made our journey amazing! So, hubby dearest, happy anniversary and let’s continue making amazing journeys together!

Carrots are Good, Part 2

20 Aug

The carrots are being dangled again this year! I figured if it worked last year for the girls with the reward being ‘The Great Adventure Road Trip to USA’, this year we will do a regional destination for its city and the islands. I love this Asean country for its food, golf courses and shopping. Both M1 and M2 have never been there but I think they are old enough now to appreciate the culture and the food, besides the shopping and sights. Also this time, I dispensed with secrecy and let it be known where and when. So the girls know what is at stake and what they have to do in order to enjoy the reward, pocket money for spending included!

The current August school holidays has ended with two weeks of staying put and not much excitement on the homefront. M2 has exactly three weeks to her big UPSR exam while M1 has the year end to show her results. She promised she will not be watching anymore ‘Friends’ until the year-end exams are over; I hope she keeps to her word.

Having made all these exciting travel plans with the children, suddenly a curve ball was thrown when we were summoned to Singapore for a year-end wedding.

Both M1 and M2 are really enthusiastic about Singapore as well but hubby is a little bit concerned. Three destinations. Uh-oh… so much traveling, so little time!

Carrots are Good, Part 1

13 Aug

I like carrots, not for its vegetable goodness but what it’s suppose to represent: rewards, as in the saying, dangle the carrots in front to get the results you want, you know.

M1 and M2 are both very carrot-, I mean, rewards-oriented. I think this is very good to spur them to dream big, study hard and do well in school. Little exams with good results will yield little rewards and big (main) exams yield a bigger windfall, it’s very clear cut.

Last year was a critical year for M1 to sit for her mid-high school exam, while M2 was to meet the target of staying in her current class. The big fat carrot: a trip to USA to visit the many places that they have only seen in magazines and travel documentaries: Disneyland, Universal Studios, Sedona, Sunset Crater, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, LA and San Francisco, just to name a few.

It was very inspiring to me to see them so motivated in their efforts to achieve what has been set out for them. There was icing on the cake as well! They get to buy whatever they fancy with their pocket money earned. Indeed a good deal for them, that is.

The big plan was set in motion early last year and the trip dubbed, “The Great Adventure Road Trip to USA”. However, in June, there were hiccups, dissatisfaction, anger, threats and tears as setbacks were encountered; targets were way off! Plans had to be restrategized to recuperate from the shock and disappointment. But the two young adventurers persevered again with their efforts and finally, determination and hard work paid off!

M1 did very well and M2 met her targets, in short. And so, in November last year, our big fat carrot was savored and brought many happy moments and memories for all. Looking back at those priceless moments, I would do it again without hesitation, that is, to plan another carrot-incentive trip to spur the girls on.

Well done!

It’s Nice to Be Back

28 Jul

We touched down on schedule at KLIA from Abu Dhabi on Friday but the luggages came out late. The girls were excited to see us but I suspect it’s more to inspect the goodies we got them. Despite being adamant to stay up to greet us, tiredness from their school day had them fast asleep before we stepped into the house.

I’d like to think it wasn’t jet lag but I couldn’t sleep at 3am in the morning, KL time; after all it’s only 9pm Paris time. But tiredness got to me too after traveling for the last 18 hours and catching sleep that was not the most relaxing, I was knocked out until the next day, 1pm!

It’s nice to be home; in familiar territory and the comforts of our space. A new destination is always exciting but home is where the heart is. The Roo came alive again upon seeing us, the children back to their animated self and the maid relieved that we are back.

The holiday is truly over as we settle back into our routine and face the reality of work come Monday. But I am already thinking and planning for the next trip! With or without the children, well, it’s left to be seen how hard they study and work towards achieving the targets set for them.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

26 Jul

It must be a good business decision to code-share, no? I am a graphic designer and no MBA holder but this must be the reason in order to make a profit.

I must say Air France’s A340-330 is not very comfortable. The personal screen in front is so small like a Nintendo compared to the screen in Etihad’s A330, which was sized like an iPad. It’s pretty obvious the former has older planes while the latter has a newer fleet. The seat and leg room comfort also differs very vastly. Guess who is better? And let’s not go into the entertainment offering.

From the service point of view, I was disappointed that I did not get the basmati rice offering on our return journey on the Paris-Abu Dhabi leg on Air France. After six days of raw beef, salad and baguette, the Asian in me was crying for rice! Let’s see if I get to fulfill my rice craving from Abu Dhabi to KL with Etihad.

But I must say Air France has nice cheese.

Analyzing the good and the bad, I suppose I can conclude and say code-sharing is to balance the cost and make the ticket affordable. After all, one can’t expect the sky and more when paying peanuts.

Two hours into flying, we were served lunch and yes, I did get my rice finally. Here’s one happy passenger to endorse the airline.

But sometimes it’s not the airline but passengers from hell who makes a situation ugly. Like the one sitting right behind me who kept kicking my seat. Mind you, it’s not a child but an elderly.

And to top it, after the meal when everything was cleared, I reclined my seat only to have it pushed back and hear her bitch that I cannot do that!

Goodness! Obviously she has never flown before and does not know passenger ethics. Kept right on bitching to the hubby who turned his head and was pissed with her manners. I pinged the stewardess to come referee the situation, as we both didn’t want this to mar the end of our pleasant holiday. Promptly she came and explained in some indecipherable language to the ignorant behind (who was still bitching) that it is perfectly fine to do what I did, and nicely told me to go ahead with it! So I stretched my seat out to the max. After all, I am also a paying customer like everyone else.

The stewardess then showed the ignorant to recline her seat, which she probably did not know how in the first place. 1-0 in favor of Etihad over the passenger from hell; well done.

Occurrences like this are rare in this era I must admit and despite the good, bad and ugly of flying, it is not going to deter me to more trips, planned or impromptu, in the future!

A New Currency

26 Jul

With four hours to kill before our final connecting flight, I needed a drink. My brother bought me a Pepsi (they don’t have Coke) and received Chiclets chewing gum as change!
