A Break in Between

Although tomorrow is the last day of the Chinese New Year celebration, there is an overlap of festivities today, hence, a break in between with a public holiday. Nice.

It is Thaipusam, a Hindu festival celebrating the victory of good over evil. Typically, during this holiday, we would sleep in or do nothing. However, being a couch potato may not be a good idea, what with eating all those festival cookies and meals for the last two weeks.

I think once Chap Goh Meh is over, full-swing exercise, or better yet, full steam ahead to play golf. With all that time away from the golf course, I think I had enough rest to allow my tennis elbow to recover.

A New Injury! Part 2

The stubborn me is still playing golf with a tennis elbow that hurts to heaven! Holy moly, I need to be disciplined and rest. In the last two games, I resorted to various methods to suppress the nagging discomfort with pain relief spray or cream, elbow strap, and pain killer. Did they help? Yes and no. Sigh.

Not only does the elbow feel the pain, but the returned score is a smack in the face for confidence and ability. One can’t have it all good all the time, right? Playing good golf is never a sure thing. There will be highs and lows. There’s no need to elaborate on the highs, but lows are injuries besides putting woes, chipping yips, and endless other reasons.

I have lined up two more games to play before I give my elbow a good two weeks of rest. Hopefully, this will work. It’s no fun playing golf in pain and acquiring more injuries to hamper the activity that I enjoy most.

A New Injury!

Golf is a dangerous sport! I picked up a new injury last week. After years of playing with minor injuries here and there on the body, my latest injury is on my right elbow, a new spot. It hurts, ouch.

I have to say I’ve never had tennis elbow issues all these years, but on the left wrist mostly. And I would wear a wrist brace to protect my wrist. The wrist is no longer an issue, thank goodness.

I suspect I picked up the tennis elbow problem from the tournament on Monday two weeks ago. I must have taken too much of a divot. Ouch, again. What else can I do but rest?

But the rest period is not long enough for a full recovery as I’m resting for a few days only when it should be weeks. So, I have to rethink my golf outings if I want a full recovery. Boo hoo hoo.

The Big Fat Truth

I will not lie when I say I am getting fat. It sounds demoralizing, but it’s the truth. Even though I am more active these days with more golf games, it does not sound like I’m burning calories to stay fit. It’s the opposite.

I suspect the after-game food and drinks are the reason for the sudden spike in my weight because my bathroom scale has been on an alarming upward trend. Perhaps I should be more disciplined with my food intake or reduce my carbohydrate intake. Then again, could it be we are eating out more these days because there are no more lockdowns?

Nevertheless, golf is supposed to be healthy, being out there sweating and working the muscles, burning the calories, and getting all the exercise. However, all these efforts will become naught if there is no discipline, especially with the after-game food and drink intake. And the terrible truth of getting fat will hang over my head. Ugh. I need to be more disciplined!

On a New Mission, Part 2

This new mission to do a daily half an hour walk on non-golfing days is coming along well. But I find that half an hour is insufficient for me to even break out in a sweat. By the time I get my engine revved up, time is up, and we’re home.

This morning, I decided to do a little extra, clocking in 47 minutes and covering a distance of 3.93 kilometers. Sweated, I did, and it felt good.

Perhaps from here forth, I should walk at least 45 minutes or more; maybe even try to hit five kilometers. I believe the distance is achievable, and the set walking duration will surpass. Good progress within such a short time, I’d say.

Almost a Pro

Our weekend golf games are routine by now. During this CMCO phase, we’ve opted to walk and carry our golf bags playing at the Hills course instead of taking the buggy. Some may say crazy but to me, that’s my outdoor gym right there and really good exercise.

I’m proud to say our stamina has improved and the past weekend we walked 18 holes on Saturday and 16 holes on Sunday. An increase in holes covered compared to the weekend before.

And both days, hubby baked in the afternoon. On Saturday, he made dinner rolls which turned out soft and fluffy. And on Sunday, ciabattas. On top of these, we did our tag team baking as well for yet another apple-filled effort.

Not a pie nor a tart, it bordered between an Apple Bread and a Caramel Apple Bomb. We had to combine two recipes because we didn’t have caramel and I didn’t want the outside to be too flaky. So a bread-like texture akin to dinner rolls instead.

Turned out good. So did the ciabattas. Like the golf, the baking is almost like a pro too. And as always, I look forward to the weekend routine of golf and baking efforts by hubby.

The Accidental Baker

I am bowled over that hubby dearest has taken to baking so effortlessly, like fish to water. I simply do not know where he gets his energy from.

Even after a round of golf, he can still bake whereas I would just keep things slow to a manageable pace. For me, it’s to cool down my body in this furnace of a weather and not sweat any further than what I have already shed at the golf course. But he just goes on.

Last Sunday, after walking 15 holes with me, we got home and two hours later, he whipped up a superb herb whole wheat loaf. And as if that’s not enough, he baked a sponge cake thereafter!

If you thought I helped in anyway, hardly… I just ate when they were fresh from the oven. Of course this encouraged the accidental baker in hubby.

And as he’s constantly at it, I have to exercise constantly too to balance my intake. The weekend golf games are scheduled already and I am pretty sure the accidental baker will bake after the games.

Golfing with Conditions, Part 2

It’s the second weekend in a row that we’ve gone to play golf. By now, golfing with conditions is not that bad, it’s for our safety after all. And it has become second nature to put on a mask whenever we are out and be mindful of social distancing.

There was improvement with this second outing as the legs held up without aches. I was more worn out by the humid weather than the walk itself and was sweating buckets. I came home almost two pounds lighter.

For two days in a row, I walked 15 holes each day and yes, I was carrying my golf bag with ten clubs. Hubby took the buggy and played 18 at the Lakes course on Saturday and walked 15 with me (and two other friends) at the Hills course on Sunday. Compared to the weekend before with nine and 14 holes over two days at the Hills course (not counting the Thursday game), this time there’s an additional seven holes in total for me.

Very good exercise is all I can say and definitely looking forward to the weekend again.

A Timely Purchase, Part 2

I have to admit… the stand mixer was an excellent purchase as hubby has been using it. I have yet to use it though because I don’t really bake from scratch, only from pre-mixes in a box that don’t need a mixer. Heheheh…

So far he’s baked three loaves of banana bread, butter cookies and a Snickerdoodle apple bread (this was oh-so-good!). There have been attempts too that did not require the stand mixer but just good old kneading and patience for the dough to rise.

All in all, the baking days have kept him busy for there have been many rainy days and he couldn’t go out to the garden. For M2 and me, it was many varieties to savor and I have been upping my exercise routine to counter all the intake.

300 Jacks

Towards the end of last week, I started doing jumping jacks. With all this baking and cooking at home, and having stopped the 16/8 diet, I have to do something to counter the intake. Hence, the jumping jack exercise.

Hubby baked butter cookies. So sweet and buttery, how to resist?

I think it’s an ideal form of exercise without having to go out of the way to exercise. Honestly to even exercise, I feel lethargic just thinking about it! So I find other means to exercise like going up and down the stairs more often, walking more around the house and keeping busy with chores.

Besides I find setting up to properly exercise not conducive when there are days I actually have some design work to do in between the daily cooking and cleaning. So doing jumping jacks has worked out well.

Each time I’d do a set of 50 and they don’t actually take up a lot of time. Spread out the routine and I find myself doing 300 jumping jacks each day!

I do feel good and less guilty. Why didn’t I think of this earlier?
