The Addiction Continues

29 Aug

Last Saturday morning, I woke up early for my golf game, planned ages ago. And in my morning ritual, the iPad Mini is always whipped out to check mail, update FB status and play a few of my usual games. To my dismay, I discovered Candy Crush has an update (to Level 410)! Oh dear. I am still stuck at 394 and the much awaited update finally came.

But I can only update after I return from the golf course. Sigh. I guess I am still suckered in to continue and just cannot pull away from this candy addiction.

After the golf game where Candy Crush was also among the topics yakked by the other lady golfers during lunch, I was given some sound advice on how to tackle that frustrating level. Armed with a new determination, I went home and got down to business. I should thank my advisor and my lucky stars for I finally crossed that dastardly level! It’s always the same pattern: just when you want to give up, they allow you to cross and get suckered in to continue the game.

For the record, I have reached the end of this new update and there’s only two possibilities: I will most likely overcome the last level and wait for the update or be frustrated by it and bid my time to overcome it. Either scenario will have me contemplating (again) whether to move forth on the computer or just wait until another new update comes around for the iPad.

Sucker indeed.

What Time Are You Coming Home?

22 Aug

Last week, it was not a typical Friday. We were so busy going in and out of the office, running errands and all. I hardly had time for my Candy Crush, let alone my Zookeeper Battle. Thank goodness work in the office was manageable. M1 had a birthday party so she was out with her friends the whole day. M2 was left home alone to do more revision on this last day of the holiday before the weekend kicked in and then back to school.

I called home several times to check on her progress and both times, she told me she was resting as her tummy did not feel well. Hmm. Excuses?

It was 8.30pm when we were on our way to fetch M1 from her friend’s place when I spoke to M2 again. “What time are you coming home?” she lamented.

“Soon. We’re on our way to fetch M1 and should be back by nine. Are you ok?” I pitied her loneliness.

“No. Mosquitoes are attacking me!” M2 complained.

“Why don’t you go upstairs to your room then?” I suggested.

“Nah. I’ll wait for you downstairs but hurry home please! I need people here so that the mosquitoes has somebody else to attack!”

Pppfffftttt…. So much for loneliness and missing us!

Too Much, Too Little

21 Aug

It was a clear case of too much, too little of everything that had M3 zonked out by 10pm last night.

From her arrival to our country, to the school for activities, to our home and doing more stuff, there was hardly time to rest. Coupled with an unfortunate sleepless night, no thanks to our mosquitoes, M3 was so exhausted to the point of being nauseous.

Earlier yesterday I commented to hubby on how I wish I had her energy when I travel. “We were only young once,” sighed hubby dearest. Indeed. But even then with M3’s youthfulness and exuberance, exhaustion got the better of her.

This morning, after the triple assault on the army of mosquitoes, I am glad to say she was well rested and back to her bubbly self and ready for another adventurous day ahead!

Being a Good Host

20 Aug

And so being a good host means bringing your guest to see the sights, after work.

The hubby and I assigned duties for each other for the evening: I was to fetch M2 from her tuition class and thereafter swing by to see my mom; he will bring M3 and M1 to see KL tonight. They’d go for a drive and enjoy the bright lights and cityscape.

A New Addiction

16 Aug

Candy Crush has me addicted to it early this year when I downloaded the app out of curiosity. I don’t normally follow trending apps and fill up my iPad with top games that half the world is playing but I guess this one caught me. It could be worst in my addiction but thankfully I am not like some of my fellow Candy Crushers who would message me on the phone or Facebook to send them lives.

Since then, I have completed the Saga twice and ‘retired’ twice (read: stopped playing temporarily) from the game. The ‘retirement’ was simply due to the fact I could not progress beyond because the app on the iPad stopped at Level 350, hence the first retirement, then an update to Level 365 and the second retirement before the latest update to Level 395. Unlike the same game on Facebook where it goes on and on, the iPad app ends here for now.

Currently, I am stuck at Level 394 and contemplating yet another retirement but sensing a déjà vu, I am at a cross road here. Should I go on or not once I reach 395? M2 tried to play the game to understand my addiction but gave up; M1 just doesn’t even look at it.

In the middle of all this soul searching, I stumbled upon a new game and the girls call it my new addiction, Zookeeper Battle. I just completed my 500th battle yesterday. It’s pretty fun, mindless and quite destressing in its own way. So my full time candy crushing status may change… we shall see.

Caught Coming Home!

12 Aug

It was one of those days when I got tired at the office with nothing doing and decided to go home early. And as I opened the front door at 4.30pm, they must have heard me because immediately, M2 called out, “Mummy! You’re not supposed to be home yet! Why are you home??!!!”

Gosh. It doesn’t matter what they were doing but am I not allowed home early? So I said, “Ok, pretend I am not home then. I will go to my room and nap till 7pm before coming out to greet you two again, ok?”

“OK!”

My own home, not allowed to be home. Eeesh.

I Have Nothing to Do

5 Aug

The school holidays are here again and it gives me mixed feelings. When the children were younger, I used to relish these times as it would mean the family would go away for short holidays, especially to the beach or to visit the grandparents or even an exciting overseas trip.

But as they grow older, trips are lesser as school work becomes more of a priority especially when the year has one of them facing a big exam. Last year, it was M1 facing her PMR exam (Junior High School level) and this year it is M2’s turn, facing her UPSR exam (equivalent to Middle School exam).

So when trips are lesser, complains increase.

“I am bored,” M2 would sigh out loud and constantly announce her state of being during the school holidays whenever we stay put. So much so, I banned her from saying the irritating phrase.

Or more horrifying if the iPod was taken away from her and she’d go, “I have nothing to do…  (Moan…) What can I do? (Groan…)” Hello….. what happened to good old activities like riding a bike, playing with the dog, playing badminton in front of the house or playing with the children next door?

Groan….. even my mother would chastise her for making this statement.

But thankfully, this time, with her facing her big exam, she’d have her revisions to keep her busy. So while M2 continues with the diligent revision during the holidays, M1 is just vegetating, watching the whole series of Friends to pass her time and I can be sure that I will not hear that ‘I have nothing to do’ statement from both of them.

Why Call it Breast-Stroke?

4 Jul

Swimming terms can be quite sexist (and intimate) as far as twelve-year-olds are concerned. M2 and her friends are rather squeamish and embarrassed when announcing they are participating in several events for their upcoming Swimming Gala.

“Why is it called breast-stroke? The word ‘breast’ makes it so….. so, jiggly!” stated M2 over dinner and M1 did a funny body jiggle, which I shall not elaborate.

M2 said her good friend declared if they’re going to call it such, why not call it ‘boob-stroke’ instead, for a lesser intimate approach!

The hubby then illustrated that when one walks into KFC, they’d say, “Can I have breast meat, please?” because nobody—NOBODY—says, ‘boob meat’ to emphasize his point on the proper usage of the word in question. Imagination ran rampant at this point as uncontrollable giggles filled the living room. ROTL… let’s see someone try that!

Anyway, I wish these 12-year-olds good luck for this Friday’s swimming competition!

Mummy’s Crushing Candies (Again)

3 Jul

Gone were the days when little children would tip toe around the house for fear of disturbing the parents, it’s the other way around for me. I find myself in this predicament every now and then when I come home early and both M1 and M2 are sitting at the dining table, diligently catching up with their school work, headphones in place of course.

The only time they would tip toe around me was when I was farming away on the iPad – planting corn, harvesting alfalfa and tending to my virtual animals. Thank goodness, when I reached the end of that game and there were no further updates, I stopped being a virtual farmer, and boisterous noise could be heard again.

However, I got hooked on Candy Crush and is a full time candy crusher now. Whenever they see me at it, they’d go, “Hrmph. Mummy’s crushing candies again,” and would hold off whatever questions they have at the tip of their tongues and slink away.

But at press time, the end is near for my love affair with this addictive game. I am now at 365, the last level on my iPad mini and am contemplating not furthering the game on Facebook once I end here. Normalcy returns and life continues after the end of the Candy Crush Saga.

Or can my life be normal again once I retire from Candy Crush? Only time can tell….
