Iron Challenge 2023

27 Jan

Sadly, I will be out of action for this year’s Iron Challenge, scheduled for this Sunday at my golf club, a tournament I play annually. I am disappointed. Boo hoo hoo.

Towards the end of last year, when the tournament date was open for registration, I was one of the early birds to sign up for it and was looking forward to it. I even started preparing myself for the challenge, playing my last few games using only my irons, no woods or hybrids for all my second and third shots save for the tee-off with the driver.

But alas, all the preparation has come to naught because of my medical condition recently. Sigh. I am supposed to be on the road to recovery, but I had a setback on Tuesday; it’s disheartening.

I don’t have the strength to move about; what more attempting to play golf? Swinging my irons like a warrior on the fairway will need Herculean efforts. And being a strokeplay tournament, I’m simply setting myself up for disaster if I participate.

So best not to be a hero when I am not ready physically and mentally; I should stay home to rest and get well faster.

Iron Challenge 2022

17 Jan

After two years of postponement, the club finally held this year’s Iron Challenge tournament yesterday. In 2020, it did not happen because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Then in 2021, it was scheduled but only to be derailed by the pandemic again. Thankfully, this year with no more lockdowns, the tournament was held.

So how did I fare?

Well, I think I did okay save for a few holes. And this is always the case. One or two tee shots going errant, landing in the rough on the left or right next to a tree root, or a couple of duff shots are enough to derail the momentum and return with an ugly scorecard.

But it was good fun, and I have always enjoyed this tournament. This year I was lucky and came out a winner in the Lucky Draw contest during the prize presentation. A bag of iron covers! I sure feel like a winner with this unexpected good fortune.

My lucky draw prize this year!

I look forward to the tournament again next year.

Challenge Deferred

21 May

Earlier in April, I talked about the Iron Challenge in my golf club and was excited about the tournament. For a couple of games, I even resorted to using only my irons to practice and kept the driver, wood, and utility clubs out of the bag. It was going well, and the mind frame was ready until the recent lockdown.

This morning, I looked at my calendar and realized the tournament would have been tomorrow if it wasn’t for the lockdown. Somehow, I overlooked removing the event from my calendar. And how unfortunate that it has been postponed again for the second time.

I hope when the pandemic situation becomes more manageable and the lockdown lifted, we can go back to playing golf. And hopefully, the Iron Challenge tournament will be reinstated. Is this wishful thinking as cases are soaring beyond control?

Iron Challenge 2021

Last year, when the Covid-19 pandemic burst onto the scene, it caused a lot of disruption to daily routines, schedules, and plans. And it was a mess as far as my golf club was concerned with their golf calendar for the year.

Many club competitions had to cancel to uphold the social distancing to curb the pandemic. And being at the club to play golf was also prohibited for the first month of total lockdown.

Luckily, the Iron Challenge, a tournament I participate in every year, was held right before the lockdown implementation. This year, the golf calendar is slightly better, and the club has held several tournaments already, but in strict adherence to the SOP outlined.

The Iron Challenge, initially slated for early March, has been rescheduled to be held on 22 May, and I am excited to sign up for the tournament again.

With a month to go, it looks like I have to change my playing strategy to prepare myself. So all the wood and utility clubs have to make way for the long irons. The long irons being the 6-, 5-, and 4-irons. We shall see how my preparation goes. Stay tuned on this.

A New Club

10 Aug

Several months ago I bought a new club, a 3-iron for a steal of a price! With thoughts of going back to playing more golf, I wanted to expand my iron usage ability.

Now I can handle my irons well, up to a 4-iron and I thought with this new addition, it could give me an edge. I don’t use my woods as much; the only wood I have in the bag is a 3-wood which sometimes can work and sometimes not. In other words, my irons work better.

I just need to build back my strength and regain my confidence if there’s any hope to improve the game a notch higher with this new club.
