A Quiet Start

2 Jan

It was a Monday but felt like a Sunday. The girls slept in because we didn’t have any solid plans and being so stuffed from dinner the night before and the many nights before as well! We have been dutifully ploughing through M1’s To Eat List before she goes back.

As for us, hubby was at his usual puttering around the garden and I was back at carving after a hiatus. With M1 back, there has been so much to do but unfortunately, sitting around at home to carve has not been one of the activity.

So yesterday, it was nice to relax at home and Citizen #120 was born! 120. What a significant number and on the first day of the new year. I have come so far for Gigglesville and I think this year the township will boom at an even greater pace. I am excited at the prospect.

It may be a quiet start but it’s a good start. We are back at work today and M2 is at school without any issues waking up.

The Day After

26 Dec

Normally every year after enjoying the merry-making of the Family Christmas Dinner, we would sleep in. But this year it’s a little different, a break from tradition; firstly, dinner was hosted by us and secondly, it was on Christmas Day itself, not Christmas Eve.

Food preparation was a long process although there wasn’t much cooking. I made the salad, M1 made the mash potatoes, M2 prepared the hors d’oeuvres of smoked bacon and grape on romaine. The focaccia herb mushroom toast bites was team effort, and the turkey and dinner rolls were contributed by my sibling. We did add a couple more purchased roasted chicken to make life easier. It’s a simple spread but satisfying nonetheless.

And because dinner was on Christmas Day itself and Boxing Day is not a holiday, we have to go into the office. Not too long but necessary to wrap up some little work we have left for the year.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

25 Dec

Here’s wishing everyone, my readers, friends and family and a very blessed and Merry Christmas!

This year, we are having the family over for Christmas dinner, Mom, my sibling and his troopers. It will be a fun Merry-making time with lots to eat, yes, I can cook if preparing a salad counts as cooking, lots to drink, and lots to talk and laugh about.

As we reflect upon the past twelve months, let our experiences make us stronger and better prepared for 2018!

HK Day 3: Lantau Island, Part 2

15 Dec

From Ngong Ping Village, we took Bus no. 2 down to Mui Wo and met up with my high school friend and her hubby for a late lunch. It was good to catch up and they treated us to a really sumptuous seafood lunch. The chatter was so rib-tickling and entertaining, just like the good old days.

I am glad we made the effort to meet up as it’s not often we see each other so much, with her residing here in Hong Kong and me in Kuala Lumpur.

After the meal and goodbye, we took the ferry across back to Hong Kong island. What a day with subway rides, cable car, bus and now the ferry. It was only 5.30pm when we were at the IFC area. We wandered a bit before making our way back to our familiar territory, bought dinner to bring back to the apartment to eat in the comforts of ‘home’.

I thought I would cover 6.0km today but no, I actually did 6.7km or 10,965 steps. Yes, we are all tired to the core but it’s a good tired.

Tomorrow it will be another day of walking and more walking! Kowloon on the agenda.

As Its Name Implied

4 Dec

I don’t know why I thought eating in Rawang was the itinerary when clearly the highway, being called Rawang Bypass, would not lead us to the town. Looks like I did my research and got it all wrong. I could have been too excited at the prospect of savouring new food to realize the implication of the name.

As its name implied, we bypassed Rawang when we did the day road trip on Friday. Our scenic and leisurely-paced drive led us to a lot of places except Rawang but it was fun!

We made several stops – at a hill slope village with a Chinese temple showcasing a karma cycle mural on its hillside wall; savoured a simple noodle lunch in another town; saw a man-made dam and appreciated the vast volume of water surrounded by the mountains; and a winding ascending drive to Fraser’s Hill for a second lunch amidst lovely weather and a very tranquil surrounding without the crowd.

I’m glad we bypassed Rawang. It was lovely especially driving to Fraser’s Hill with towering trees to admire along the way and cool weather to appreciate because of the elevation. Such a welcome change in weather, we had the windows down all the way and turned off the air-con in the car. Indeed sheer driving pleasure.

And the walk around the quaint little town enjoying the foliage and green surrounding, breathing in the fresh air, made this impromptu stop very enjoyable.

I am sure we will be back to discover more and poor Rawang will be bypassed again.

Bored to Tears

1 Dec

The year-end school holidays has just started and M2 is bored to tears staying at home. She claims that there’s nothing to do. So for that, I insisted that she should continue to do her revision daily because next year is an important exam year for her. Make use of the time at home rather than idle away doing nothing.

I don’t remember facing the same predicament when I was 16 because I had my tree to climb, the garden to play in and lovely weather to be outdoors during the dinosaur years. Unfortunately in this era, the tree in the garden is not worthy to be climbed, the garden is soggy and it’s been raining constantly. I guess I cannot fault her for complaining.

Well, thank goodness today is yet another public holiday so she’s getting a break. We are taking a short day trip to discover a new town using the new elevated highway that was officially opened just two days ago. And of course, road trips that we take usually include food and discovery of more food! Hopefully this will quell the boredom.

Oh my waistline is all I can say…

Those Varmints!

31 Oct

I’ve decided to not replenish my gum ball machine because last week, I found some intruders helping themselves to my last batch of M&Ms. It was gross.

Put it this way, I spotted some nibble trails on several pieces and this led me to discover four unwanted tiny intruders inside the gum ball machine amidst the M&Ms. Ewwwww… Where they’d come from I don’t know because they certainly weren’t there prior.

I feel sick thinking about it. Ewwww…..

Change in Taste

13 Oct

Instead of topping up the gum ball machine with more M&Ms, I decided to change my chocolate stash in the office. I felt I needed a change and opted for mini Snickers.

Yes, I enjoy chocolate but cautious not to overeat. Then again, I should throw away caution and just reach for them when I am stumped for ideas in the office to have a booster. Sometimes coffee alone is insufficient.

The new supply has only eight pieces and so far, I have eaten two bars. I think this pack will not last, it’s too good and a great creative stimulant!

The Gum Ball Machine, Part 3

6 Oct

After nearly eight months, the M&M’s in my gum ball machine are finally depleting. It’s been really slow to consume them because I am not munching on them constantly. So who is doing all that eating? Honestly, it’s M2 and only when she comes by the office, which is not often.

Nonetheless, I will have to replenish the supply soon. Maybe I won’t go for the crispy and with nuts type but just good ol’ plain M&Ms. Mmmm…..

Oh My English

2 Oct

Local Chinese restaurants in Malaysia are awesome especially those that are family-owned. While their food and cooking are really good, the same cannot be said for their English to attract patrons.

These two restaurants that we have been to recently are perfect examples of what I mean.

I am not too sure what is a ‘Chicken Cute’ on the menu. Chicken Cubes? Then right above this category is another eyebrow-raising item: Hong Kong style pig Sharpei! Goodness gracious. Are they serving Sharpeis? It’s too hilarious and a challenge trying to figure these out.

Then at another restaurant, they had a banner at their entrance listing ‘Pork Crab’ besides Marmite Crab and Sweet Sour Crab, the last two being the cooking style. ’Pork Crab’ certainly does not sound like a cooking style. And we know there’s pork and there’s crab but ‘Pork Crab’? What is it?

After a while, I finally understood what it meant. It’s a direct translation from the Chinese phrase that actually meant ‘Meaty Crab’!

It’s always a delight to discover such places for their food and the unintended humour.
