The Russian Killer

9 Nov

When you see a name like Svetlana, one would think ‘Russian’ then ‘spies’, ‘KGB’ and all the intriguing spy plots. Typical stereotype profile. So when you have a fish name Svetlana, it is no different.

M2’s pet Betta, Svetlana has been labelled the ‘Russian Killer’ because  hubby’s Finney and M1’s yet-to-be-named-Betta were all bitten by her! Their demise was quick and in succession. My Bubles survived the attack thankfully. For how long more, we don’t know.
It looks like we may have to buy another batch of Bettas and pray that Svetlana won’t take them out.

Tough being a fish with a Russian killer around.

Exam Week

6 Nov

This whole week M2 is facing her final exams, postponed to this week because of the haze two weeks ago. She has been hard at it, I can see the efforts and determination. Every night after dinner, she would sit at the dining table pouring over the books.

She has also woken up every morning at 4am, an hour better than what M1 used to do, to try to cramp in some last minute studying. This I am not sure works but I can see the efforts. I was never like this even when facing the biggest exams in my life!

I hope all this will not be in vain. Today is the last day.

Tired of Michael

5 Nov

I listen to Michael Buble in my car all the time. But sometimes when I get tired of him, I switch to Jacky Cheung or Sam Cooke. Pretty lame music choices but they are soothing. And definitely way better than the radio that constantly has annoying chatter and cackles plus advert interruption.

If I want to drive to work daily, at least it should be pleasant and pleasant ambience, music in other words, is important.

Now my six CD changer in the car has gone kaput. So I am only using the single CD player. Hence the same music all the time. Sigh… unless I change and it is quite a bother to do so.

Last week, I rediscovered my iPod Mini. The first generation model and the first of my many Apple devices. And in it, I loaded 932 songs which would be ideal for the car! It’s pre-Michael days and so many genre and choices.

But alas… the dinosaur device can’t hold water. Its battery simply cannot last. Double sigh…

Thank goodness I found my other device, the iPod Shuffle and with 124 songs in it and pre-Michael days too, I am pretty much spoilt for choice. So yay, no more Michael for the time being until I get tired of the 124 songs.

We Couldn’t Resist

3 Nov

We were supposed to leave early yesterday but the lure of Penang food was too tempting to leave the island without savouring it. It feels incomplete to be in Penang and not eat, you know? So we ended up at Restaurant 113 on Lebuh Melayu for Duck Meat Kueh Chap. Needless to say, it was good.

We also ordered Tiger Char Kueh Teow and Lobak from the shop on Carnarvon Street, perpendicular from where we were. These people delivers even though we are one coffeeshop away and facing a different street!

After the satisfying breakfast, we bid Penang goodbye. And already making plans for a return soon.

This time I made sure the prawns were visible!

The Wedding

2 Nov

We actually drove to Penang over the weekend to attend a cousin’s wedding dinner. As the invitation came our way many many months ago from hubby’s uncle, we readily agreed. Unlike the last time where we missed out (we were in Bangkok) when the same uncle invited us for his daughter’s wedding, this time we made sure we would come for his son’s happy occasion.

Penang is always a lovely place to return to especially for the food. We had to have the obligatory Char Kueh Teow on Saturday night for dinner. But time was not on our side and there wasn’t much opportunity to eat other stuff because on Sunday morning, we were busy with the traditional tea ceremony.

By the time the morning session was over with a light luncheon served, we rested. Come evening, a light cocktail took place before the dinner. So there was no time at all to sneak in a street food.

The banquet was held at E&O Hotel, a lovely colonial place. The bride and groom were lovingly radiant and it was good for the old generation to meet up. Occasions like this are running out as most of hubby’s cousins were married.

Dinner ended late as always with Chinese wedding dinners. Thankfully we stayed another night before making our way back to the city today.

To the Dentist, Part 4

30 Oct

So I managed to get an appointment with the dentist yesterday. The outcome was not good. The little gaping hole was actually not that big a hole but it’s the tooth that I should be worried.

The dentist did a quick patch up job and explained that the hairline crack splitting my tooth down its middle has grown! Oh dear. The next big impact may result in it to be pulled out. Gulp. Not good at all.

What have I been eating? I thought I have been very careful but he said it is no point to chew on one side because the hairline crack has been in existence for a while now. No matter how I eat, there will always be grinding and force even if I used only one side.

The day will come when the tooth finally gives in and splits. Hopefully not that soon. And when that day comes, I have two choices, either a bridge or an implant. Crowning is not an option with the weaken base. So with either one, it’s bye bye pre-molar, you’ve been good while you lasted. Sigh…

Last night I flossed my teeth and felt something sharp. A little chip… uh oh. Methinks at this point, that day will come sooner than later.

Blue Skies!

29 Oct

It is exhilarating to finally see the sun and feel some heat. The past several days, there has been a change in the weather. Strong winds and lots of rain. The haze is slowly ebbing away, slowly but surely.

School has been back in motion with M2 studying away in preparation for the postponed final exam but golf activities are hampered by rain this time. Can’t win them all but I am not complaining. Breathing is better, vision is clearer and blue skies are here! Yay.

To the Dentist, Part 3

27 Oct

My tooth’s filling fell out again over the weekend! The top right premolar. This time I am not sure how or what. There was no crunch sound nor any remnants of a tooth filling in the mouth.

I don’t think my Sunday morning breakfast of scrambled eggs on toast, followed by some crackers caused it. Something definitely came off because I can feel the irritating small gap with the tip of my tongue.

Sigh. Another visit to the dentist soon.

Never Play Offline

26 Oct

It was Friday and we were on our way home. The rain came down heavily and I was tired, having used quite a fair bit of my creative brain cells in the office. Hubby was driving so I whipped out my iPad for my usual dosage of my games during the unusual hour long journey home. Can’t live without them, you know… the games, not the traffic. I must admit I did play some virtual games in the office whilst being stumped for ideas.

Usually all the King.com games can be played offline so routinely, I did my usual three. Then I moved on to Monster Busters. Now this game cannot be played offline. It would prompt you to go on as guest because there’s no connection but I didn’t try. So I exited and left it as is, without further thoughts to it.

That evening, after a hearty dinner, it was time to unwind. I reached for my trusty iPad and launched Monster Busters.

To my horror, when the game launched, I was at Level 1! Oh my gawd. What happened?! I should be at Stage 595 but, no, I was right at the beginning. I freaked out a bit. Closed the app and relaunched. Same thing!

When I told M2, she asked if I was logged in to Facebook which I was not; this happened when I tried playing the game offline earlier in the car. Thank goodness after connecting to FB, I catapulted back up to Stage 595.

Phew and double phew! Moral of the story here, never try to play offline when they tell you so.

Hooray!

23 Oct

Today the hazy condition improved slightly and schools finally reopened. So M2 is back in school. Miraculously, strong winds did come and blew the haze up north. Hooray for us. But alas! The people in the northern region are now suffering the fate that befell us a few days ago and schools there are closed.

Well hazy or not, my virtual games progressed well. I have finally moved from the super tough Level 804 in Farm Heroes and super duper tough Level 512 in Candy Crush Soda. As for Candy Crush, hooray to say I am crowned champ yet again earlier this week!

Not a Miso or Mushroom Master but a Cosmic Commander of Marmalade Moon. And this morning, to my pleasant surprise, upon my completion of the chapter, Wonky Wonderland, I found myself crowned ‘Pastry Paladin’ for it.

Maybe that was what happened… as I became Cosmic Commander, I commanded a gale of cosmic proportions to blow the haze away while I crushed my way to become a Pastry Paladin. Lame… I know, but I couldn’t help it. Hooray nonetheless…
