You Gotta Look Up!

14 Mar

Two weekends ago, I had to go to the office to get something. As I was walking towards the elevator, this guy almost walked into me because he was not looking ahead but at his smartphone. Hrmph.

Nowadays I see a lot of people walking on the streets do not look at where they are going. Instead, they are constantly looking down at their smartphones, busy replying messages, reading status updates or even playing games. What these people don’t realize is how dangerous this is.

Firstly they don’t see where they are going and just walking blindly. Secondly they become oblivious to the surrounding and are not alert as to who or what are in their path. If something were to happen, chances are they would be caught off guard. I could have bumped the guy and have that smartphone knocked off his hands!

There was once I was caught off guard with my surrounding. And this was dinosaur years ago, an era without smartphones and it’s enough to leave a permanent scar.

I had just gotten off the PATH train from Jersey City at the World Trade Center in New York City. Remember this was dinosaur years ago and the World Trade Center still existed. On that fateful day, after I got off the train, I withdrew some cash from the ATM machine and was heading to the office on Broadway.

Somehow on that particular mid-morning, I was a bit dreamy and had my earphones plugged in, oblivious to my surrounding. I was heading down the stairs to get onto the subway when a foul smelling homeless guy bumped into me along the stairs!

I did not panic or whatsoever because I couldn’t hear what he was saying. My music was blasting so loud, I wasn’t paying attention and was totally caught off guard.

He grabbed me by my collar, gave me a shake and came close to my face; I could not avoid his reeking alcohol breath. Ugh, puke… With his other hand near my cheek, hiding a blade, he repeated himself.

One earphone dislodged from my ear when he shook me again and this time, I heard him, “Give me all your money or I’ll cut up you f@*king face.” Some things you remember for life, like this instance.

And still, I did not panicked. It took awhile before I registered what was happening. And when I realized what was going on, the first thought that came to my mind was ‘Oh crap! I just withdrew some cash!” Not a thought of my safety but the money! Geez.

I was being mugged in broad daylight at the World Trade Center! All because I wasn’t paying attention to my surrounding. Amazingly, there wasn’t anybody coming up or going down the stairs because the trains had left and the crowd dispersed so quickly.

“What…?” I said.

By now, I think a good few seconds passed but it felt like forever. Before I could react, thank goodness, someone did come up the stairs and disrupted the scene. Foul smelling guy released my collar and incredulously said, “Thank you for your time!” and hurried off up the stairs.

It was only at that exact moment that I panicked. I flew down the stairs (thankfully, I did not trip and tumbled down) and in haste, crossed the turnstile and prayed for the train to hurry up. The train came and I jumped in.

By then, both my legs were trembling when I sat down. Gosh! What a close call. The two years that I had lived in New York City and Jersey City, I never once had any trouble because I was always alert and aware of my surroundings. But this one time on an off chance of not being aware, I almost became a mugging statistic. Shudder, it could have ended badly. Thank goodness it didn’t.

From then on, I always, always pay attention to my surrounding and never fiddle with my iPhone5S whenever I am walking on the streets. One must always look up for you may never know what you will bump into or who may bump into you.

The App Messed Up

13 Mar

I was quite busy last week at the office so I didn’t have time to update my phone OS to save my Candy Crush Soda game which couldn’t launch at all. On Friday night, the app update appeared again and I tried again.

This time the issue righted itself and I could launch the app without any problems. Yay! It’s fine on my phone that is still on iOS7.1.2. So basically the app messed up and it wasn’t an OS problem that caused unnecessary anxiety for the progress of the game.

And since it’s okay now, the phone remains as is (not gonna update the OS). I may have lost my progress of the daily collection but I can always start all over.

It could have been 203 days like my iPad Mini

So Annoying, Part 2

10 Mar

On Tuesday night I updated my Candy Crush Soda app on my iPhone5S but didn’t get to play the next day because I was rather busy in the office. Then the next night when I launched the game on the phone to play because I used up the lives on my iPad Mini, the app couldn’t launch. Uh oh… What’s going on?

I restarted the phone and the same problem persisted. Oh no…

Is this a sign to make me update my iOS? I am still a dinosaur at iOS7.1.2 because I refuse to update. It’s a long story but the price I pay for this resistance is high. There are many new apps and features of the phone I cannot use because they require at least iOS8. Arghh…

Remember my iPad Mini crashed when I updated to iOS9? Frustrated the daylights out of me. And I somehow felt that if I took this plunge with my phone, the worst will recur. Such negative thoughts!

But now with my precious game rendered useless, I may have to seriously reconsider to update the OS otherwise I will be constantly irked that I cannot collect my daily rewards from Candy Crush Soda on my iPhone5S.

The Big Debate

9 Mar

Now that I’ve concluded it wasn’t the chocolate’s fault and I have two bags of M&Ms, I am caught in between on a decision.

I actually have an M&M chocolate dispenser (a Christmas gift) in contention with my gum ball machine to be of service to store my chocolate supply. While it’s of purely sentimental reasons that I want to use the gum ball machine, the thing is so old, it may not be hygienic. On the outside, it’s rather dusty even after cleaning, what more the inside of its solid base? I dare not think beyond the dust…

But if I use the new and clean M&M dispenser, the thing is so plastic-ky and unauthentic, there is no joy in eating. Also, unlike the real gum ball machine, the thing doesn’t require coins to dispense, it’s no fun. Sigh…

It’s a silly debate seriously but a debate nonetheless.

One of Mine

7 Mar

I love this painting that I did many years ago. Sometimes I see clouds above the mountains, other times it’s the ocean and the horizon. It gives a sense of calmness regardless of what I make it out to be whenever I look at it.

I took a painting class in summer during college and it was rather enjoyable. Like every other student, I started off using sable brushes but somehow I never did master this tool. Instead I prefer the palette knife.

Naturally, this two feet by four feet oil piece was completed using just the palette knife and no brushes at all. And it used to hang behind my sitting space at the old office. I hope to have it up at the new office in my room soon, one of the few places that can have big paintings up.

Good Effort

6 Mar

Now that Sports Day is finally over, M2 was drained to the core and have fallen sick over the weekend. All that commitment and dedicated efforts paid off with a third place medal for the team relay run and a second placing for the Cheer Team.

Well done!

Sports Day

3 Mar

Tomorrow M2 will be having her Sports Day and for the past several weeks, she has been staying back after classes to prepare for it. My M2 is in the cheer team besides participating in the compulsory track and field events.

Being involved in these activities, she felt she needed to put in some extra practice so that she will do well on the actual day. Even on weekends, she and her friends would go to school to practice their cheer routine. Such dedication.

During my time when I was in high school, I don’t recall ever wanting to stay back after school. Even when Sports Day was around the corner, I didn’t have such dedication and determination like M2.

I guess back then, school was not the nicest place to hang out after classes. I remember there was one time, there were rumors that the main bathroom was haunted! Who would want to stay back after school with such news circulating? How to go to the bathroom?

Oh man… now that I think about it, it’s hilarious. There were stories of a blood-sucking white bedsheet-clothed vampire lurking in the bathroom. And if one goes in there, the poor soul would be possessed, attacked or worst, left for dead! My goodness (chortle), such wild imagination we had back then as teenagers.

Whether it was true or not, I certainly avoided the main bathroom during school hours. And if I really had to, I would use the teachers’ bathroom at a different block away from the main bathroom building. As for my Sports Day, sadly nothing worthy to be remembered.

Not Enough Walls

2 Mar

Not everyone likes walls because walls restrict and make a place feels confined. But having walls in an office is different. We don’t have enough walls in the new office to hang up our art pieces because the place is smaller with lesser walls.

Unlike world events of having THE controversial wall, our ‘problem’ is an insufficient amount of solid walls to display the big paintings. The room partitions are not strong enough to bear the weights of these pieces, so we have to be selective to see which ones get to be put up.

All these years at the old office, there was ample wall space and I guess we took it for granted. Sigh…

That’s my Karel Appel. Nice?
