Ha Long and Hanoi 2025, Part 2

25 Feb

On the third day of our trip to Vietnam, we left Ha Long for Hanoi. The difference is immediate in terms of scenery and traffic. Hanoi was more congested, with more buildings, vehicles, and people. It was cold when the bus pulled up to our next hotel, within the Old Quarter.

After checking in, we went in search of food before wandering the streets to do some shopping. There were some good bargains, but I was selective and did not want to buy for the sake of buying, you know? It was my second trip to Hanoi after all – in the end, I bought two bags of aromatic coffee beans for my indulgence.

The third golf game was, by far, the toughest. It was cold and misty, drizzling, and wet. Hilltop Valley Golf Club is not for the faint of heart. The low visibility made it hard to see where the ball flew. Despite the challenges, I was lucky to lose only two balls, unlike a few others, who lost a range from five to ten balls for their round! Dang.

Teeing uphill into the abyss and pray!

My putting was terrible throughout the three days, though. So bad, I have no words to describe. I can only kick myself in the butt for bringing a new, untested putter for this trip! Duh. What was I thinking? But I try not to let the putting mar my overall experience. My flightmates were fun, and it was good company.

Generally, golfing in Hanoi can be very enjoyable if the weather is cool and stays that way. It borders on discomfort when the temperature dips a little, making it hard to grip the golf clubs. Sigh, we are not used to such conditions.

Nevertheless, food is always the bright spot! Vietnamese food is very flavorful but not too extreme in its flavors or oily. Besides the food, Vietnamese coffee is the next best thing! I find myself drinking more coffee than my usual intake.

Now that this trip is done and checked off the bucket list, would I consider returning to these two places again? Of course! There are some more attractions that we missed out on because it was a golf trip above all. So long, Ha Long and Hanoi, we enjoyed ourselves despite the cold weather, but I’m sure we will be back.

My First Cuppa

13 Apr

After nine and a half weeks of staying away from coffee, I was finally ready to drink it again and had my first cuppa yesterday. And… it tasted… yucky!

The aroma didn’t perk me up nor did the taste appeal to me. Bleargh… how could I drink this, this black coffee everyday prior to my health problems?

Could it be due to the lengthy abstinence, it does not appeal to me anymore? Strange considering that this was G7, the Vietnamese coffee that I used to like. Earl Grey tea tastes so much better if you ask me!

Maybe I need to drink more often to get back to appreciating the smell, flavour and taste of coffee. After all, this was my first cuppa after what seemed like an eternity.

New Flavors, Part 2

9 Dec

Dissatisfied with the new coffee that I am on to now, I was on a mission to buy something nice for my morning cuppa. I recalled awhile back someone told me that we can now buy the Vietnamese coffee, G7 here at the local supermarket. Oohh… how enticing!

G7 is the super nice and fragrant coffee that I bought from my Ho Chi Minh trip a few months back. Obviously my regular grocer does not carry it. So we went out of the way to that particular supermarket and lo and behold, G7 was in abundance on the shelves. Yay…

I was conservative and just grabbed two boxes and a bag of 3-in-1 as I should finish consuming the bottle of Columbian that I have currently. Also now that I know where to get good coffee, I don’t really need to stash an abundance of supply away.

New Flavors

6 Sep

After my supply of the super fragrant G7 Vietnamese coffee finished, I decided to be a little bit adventurous and moved on to new brands to try. And sadly, they pale in comparison. Sigh…

The Douwe Egberts Smooth Caramel may smell nice but is only good with sugar which I prefer not to add to my daily intake. So I can’t drink this every morning although I do admit I occasionally have a coffee (a ready 3-in-1) with creamer and sugar, it’s not often. Have cut down my sugar intake with coffee for the longest time and have gotten used to it. A strong black is always good and preferred.

The Percol Smooth Colombia is slightly better but its aroma doesn’t perk me up as much. Well, gotta make do. A decent coffee is better than no coffee in the morning to start the day!
