Eating in Hanoi

Food in Hanoi was glorious! Bursting with flavors and almost similar to the tastes in Thailand, one can easily forget the waistline! Food aside, coffee is a big thing too. Our hotel was very central in its location for food and shopping.

During the day, nothing was out, but by nightfall, tiny chairs and small tables lined up along the sidewalks in front of all the buildings, ready for customers to dine in these pop-up street restaurants. It must be the French influence that has all the chairs facing the street for people-watching. Correct me if I am wrong on this.

The narrow streets became more narrow when the dining furniture was all placed outside. Yet, vehicles of all sizes still come into the streets from both directions! Yikes. Even the big canopies were insufficient to deter the traffic from the area. It was quite a sight to behold.

The ushers of the pop-up eateries were rather aggressive, fighting for customers to patronize their places. The trick not to succumb to their pushiness is to avoid eye contact and walk as fast as possible on the crowded street. Don’t even peek at the menu shoved in front of your face.

The few streets near our hotel had all sorts of offerings. Besides food at a proper restaurant, by the sidewalk, or from the street stall vendors, drinks or dessert in a café, tourists were spoilt for choice for shopping, massages, pubs, and even pharmacies. The only thing stopping one is the lack of money from going all out at everything!

For us, we tried some here and there. We ate, drank beer, and sat on short chairs. We also shopped, had ice cream, and drank coffee but skipped the pubs and foot massages. All these were achieved in just the two streets near the hotel after golf, unlike in Bangkok recently, where we walked so much and everywhere to do the same things.

Hanoi was fun. We also managed to take in some sights, visiting the One Pillar Pagoda, Tran Quoc Pagoda, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and the Vietnam Military History Museum.

Would I return? Most definitely, but plans have to factor in which time of the year for the nice cooling weather. Then, only the experience of Hanoi for its flavors, sights, sounds, and golf would be the best!

Chinese New Year in Bangkok, Part 4

We made three short drinks and snack stops before visiting the Grand Palace on the third day in Bangkok. The first stop was for a macha green tea, followed by coffee and a pastry, and lastly, an ice cream. Fueled, we were ready for the adventure ahead.

It was such a hot day! And oh-so crowded. You can tell that these visitors are tourists from all over the world. Just about every other person who walked past us was wearing elephant-print pants. A sure sign of a tourist!

The Grand Palace

The buildings and temples within the Palace grounds were magnificent. The Grand Palace itself was a grand piece of architecture. Unfortunately, some attractions were closed for renovations, but we didn’t mind. We just soaked in the overall grandeur of the place.

When we left the palace grounds, my legs were ready to fall off! Do we have to walk any more? We had to because there were hardly any taxis available nearby. Thank goodness for mobile data that helped us a lot during this trip. Using her mobile phone, M1 figured out which bus to take to leave the area. But the bus Number 2 we hopped on was going in the wrong direction! Hahaha. We didn’t know.

Nevertheless, what an experience to be on a bus with wooden flooring! How often would you get to be on one in a big city? And the conductor was kind enough to allow us to stay until the next stop without collecting any bus fare. Finally, we managed to hail a cab and headed to Siam Paragon for dinner.

Again, like the day before, it was late when we got back to the hotel. Thank goodness, the next day, the itinerary is a much more relaxed one. Phew.

Up and About, Part 2

After leaving The British Museum, we headed over to the Theatre District. The ice cream shop caught my eye! We must have ice cream despite the cold.

The honeycomb biscoff choice was excellent. Fueled with a sudden sugar rush, everyone caught a second wind in energy, and we continued. It felt like dinner time because night has fallen. But it was only 5.00pm! What?! There’s still a long way to go before dinner time.

So we went to Covent Garden first, then to Chinatown for dessert to enjoy a hot Matcha Green Tea with cheese and Mochi. The drink was very yummy! Somehow a hot drink made us feel colder instead of ice cream. We decided then it was time for dinner.

The Fish & Chips portions were huge but delicious, nonetheless. Sated but tired, everyone agreed it was time to make our way back to the hotel. By the time we reached our room. I registered 21,231 steps and clocked in 13.25km for the day! What a record. Oh, by the way, my Move and Stand streak in the Fitness app did not end during the flight. And with more walking ahead, these streaks will go on. Yay!

Boxing Day

It’s Boxing Day and we left town to continue on with the food trail. After the sumptuous Christmas Eve dinner, we spent a very chilled Christmas Day at the mall and checked off a few more items on the ‘To Eat’ list.

We then watched the IMAX version of Star Wars the Rise of Skywalker which was very entertaining. Shopping was not on the agenda that much, rather a cold beer was preferred at our favorite haunt that we brought M1 to.

So this morning, we left home at ten and headed for Big Tree Foot for lunch instead of Ipoh this time. We felt a different destination would be nice for a change. But before we reached our intended destination, the Agromall was a must-stop to buy some local fruits!

I am in seventh heaven with the discovery of the perfect ice cream. It was the usual Sunday grocery chore and when I walked passed the freezer section and the pint of Ben & Jerry’s caught my eye.

Non-dairy! Whoa. That’s new and the first time I am seeing it. Of course I picked it up because it’s non-dairy and it’s a Ben & Jerry’s plus it’s my favorite flavor, Chunky Monkey.

Forget the sorbet (it’s still in the freezer) for I am going with this to satisfy my ice cream cravings without worry. Ahhh…. such bliss.

Unusual Flavors

Over the weekend, we had the most unusual after-dinner dessert. We decided to visit a fine desserts cafe after googling it up, and decided to try it out since it was just a short drive from the mall where we had dinner.

The menu wasn’t extensive but enough with the usual offerings of dessert, coffee and tea. As always, we shared our portions.

The single scoop was rather interesting – ice cream made from Guinness Stout, yes the stout beer and contained alcohol. I still can’t get into my sorbet (there’s still half of the pint in the freezer) so I have resorted to indulging in small intake of real ice cream.

The other dessert choice was an Apple Strudel with a scoop of Black Pepper Mango ice cream! The strudel was normal like any other strudel but this ice cream…. obviously we’ve never had anything like it before! What a combination.

Comparing both flavors, the three of us preferred the stout ice cream. Although the crushed pepper was too strong and totally subdued the mango flavor, I liked that the pepper provided a nicer crunch than the pistachio bits. Very unusual.

I foresee this will be our new favorite haunt for dessert if we feel like having some dessert after dinner regardless of future dinner venues.

Going Dairy-Free, Part 2

So I tried the Ciao Bella mango sorbet. Hmm… I am not sure if I like it although I appreciate hubby and M2’s thoughtfulness of buying it for me. Ice cream has always been up there on my list of comfort food but not sorbet.

It was a bit weird to spoon frozen fruit puree instead of smooth ice cream. Moreover, it was too sweet for my liking given that I have eliminated sugar almost totally from my diet. Are all dairy-free sorbet this sweet? Maybe I should try another brand and flavor.

Perhaps after this pint is consumed (I’m sure eventually), I may go back to normal dairy ice cream just to appease the urge for something cold, bearing in mind not to be excessive in the portion intake. After all moderation is the key to manage the Endometriosis pain levels.

On one hand, I’d like to be careful with what I eat, then again I’d like to enjoy and savour the choice. Unfortunately, I just can’t relate to this sugar-laden, dairy-free frozen puree.

Flavor of the Month

Of late, M2 has adopted a new approach to request for things. The persistency is what I call ‘Flavor of the Month’ whereby the star ice cream flavor is heavily promoted. In this context, the star item is constantly requested.

Whenever we go out, her persistent badgering never stops. So far, the ‘flavors’ that I can remember ranges from a hoodie jacket, Christmas lights, a beanie and a mini skateboard. The latest being a pair of sunglasses.

“Oh! Can I have sunnies?” she’d ask innocently and M1 would roll her eyes upon hearing this.

“Is this the flavor of the month?” I would ask.

She would beam at me and flash a grin, “Yup!”

I would then beam back at her and flash a grin, “Nope!”

Sometimes the cheekiness in her gets the better of her and she would point out, “Mommy, it’s flavor of the week! Last week, it was something else!”

How nice of her to remind me. Nonetheless, it’s a constant battle. I hope the request novelty wears off soon before I actually cave in.
