What a Pleasant Surprise!

21 Mar

Despite the early wake up call, the energy and spirits were high. Breakfast was sumptuous and satisfying. Onwards then to the next golf course! Alpine Golf Club was a pleasant surprise from Inthanon. Lush and green, there was no indication of drought and lack of water. It was literally green everywhere.

We had plenty of fun on top of an enjoyable round of golf. Well, with a chip in for a birdie for a highlight of my game (and there were two other birdies today from the others), the game ended in good spirits for all. Totally deserved the Singha beer at the clubhouse during lunch!

After lunch at Alpine, we head on to check in at Holiday Inn. A quick rest and a massage awaits us all…

What Did I Tell Ya?

21 Mar

The morning call from the front desk was a horrible shrill. Yes, 5.30am… Wakey, wakey! Yawn… It is Day 2 and today we will leave the Resort and head to Alpine Golf Club.

I will continue my sleep in the van.

A Hazy Start

20 Mar

I managed to catch 20 winks probably instead of 40. We arrived on time. CHX Airport looks new and within a short time, the luggages were out and our tour guide greeted us. We are using cuegolf.com again as we find their packages well-planned. Deciding breakfast was needed, we headed for fish ball flat noodles at a local coffee shop. Then an hour’s journey through the haze. I thought we were escaping the haze back home but it looks worse here.

Inthanon Golf and Natural Resort look nice but not as lush as Kirimaya (which we went to last November). Maybe it’s because of the heat and the dry looking grounds that it does not look appealing. But the resort has amusing signages and statues playfully placed here and there that makes up what it lacks.

The heat was unbearable. Thank goodness I had my umbrella. The golf course was dry and fast. Our ladies group was fairly matched; we had fun and a good fight despite the heat. Walking the whole five hours, I have definitely surpassed the walking quota for the day: 19,819 steps, 575 kcal burnt and covering 10.85km and the day has not even ended. Mind you, this stats does not include our adventure from 3.00am this morning!

All in all, it’s a good start.

Can’t help but grin when greeted by these two at the Reception.

The Ugly Crocs are Traveling Again!

19 Mar

Well, well… Guess what? I am traveling again! Seems like an eternity that I last went away on vacation. Eternity?! Some may query. Well it was November and it was last year, so it seemed like a long time ago…

Nonetheless, a vacation is always totally deserving to get away from the work stress and all. So hubby and I, along with my ugly Crocs and our golfing buddies, are off to Chiangmai, Thailand for some golfing fun.

So goodbye KL! I can’t wait…

Am I a Brand Loyalist?

18 Mar

It was a typical Sunday and I was heading out from the house. As I stretched my legs out to my comfortable pair of Rockport sandals, I realized I have three other pairs of the same brand, different models of slippers and sandals of course. It suddenly made it wonder if I was a brand loyalist.

Like recently, I had to throw away my worn out Reebok gym shoes and got myself another pair of Reebok. Then there was the unfortunate incident last year where my Footjoy golf shoes were stolen. Initially I bought another brand, Head but found it not as comfortable and ended up buying another Footjoy. Now come to think of it, all my golf gloves are of one particular brand and model – Wilson Staff Premium Microfiber Comfort Gel Grip Palm. Nothing else.

What about my handbags? Hmm… Most of them are Salvatore Ferragamo, even my wallet and my spare wallet! My other handbags are Jim Thompson… Brand loyalist? Or comfort creature? Either way, I would be loved for my brand loyalty, no doubt!

A New Cow

28 Feb

Two weeks ago, I spent a girls’ weekend with M1 and M2 when hubby went off to play golf. It was our usual routine at the mall: a nice lunch, a leisure browse at the bookstore, a quick survey at the pet shop and fulfilling the buying stuff agenda but no major shopping. When we got to the pet shop, we decided to buy Roo a new toy since his cow has been in tatters while his sheep was mutilated beyond use. After much debate, M1 chose the same cow as before. It was a simple rationale: official pet number one loves the color orange and he adored his old cow, even in tatters, so the new cow would definitely be revered as much.

Indeed. That night, we had a happy Roo, tired out from playing with his new cow.

Happy Christmas and Merry New Year!

24 Dec

I cannot believe another year has gone by so fast! Wasn’t it just yesterday the whole family was visiting the US – the adults catching up with some of our dearest friends and the children seeing what I deem as my favorite places from my college days? Wait a minute, that was last year! Dang.

The past few days I was reminiscing about this time of the year and out of the blue, the song by Band Aid (Do They Know It’s Christmas?) popped into my mind! Wow. That was dinosaur years ago. Watching the music video when John Taylor (of Duran Duran) fleetingly appeared made my heart skipped a beat even after all these years. Sigh…

It’s such a classic and oldie now, that song.

This year I decided to host the family Christmas (eve) dinner, relieving my only sibling of this annual duty. I look forward to the usual happy, fun and boisterous occasion despite the reduced head count (the twins are away in college and the younger niece, at camp). The tree is up, the presents are in place, the wine chilled and the food prepared with love. This time of sharing will no doubt be cherished.

This year has been significant for me, in many aspects of my life. For starters, I tried Candy Crush (in March) out of curiosity and look what happened? I became so addicted to it, I qualify to be called a professional candy crusher. I also started this blog (in June) and have been going strong ever since. With 4,851 views and more than 200 ‘Likes’ so far, I must be doing something right.

This year also marked my M1 turning Sweet 16 and my M2 fairing well in her UPSR exam. Children aside, Hubby and I traveled a fair bit—not to new destinations—but to near and far and enough to keep our sanity in check to balance up the work stress that we face daily.

And this year I made more new friends compared to any past given year. Pretty unusual but then again, golfing friends are a unique breed and it’s nice that it has developed into wonderful friendships over many outings and dinners beyond the fairways and greens. I also rekindled old friendships, thanks to technology for making the world smaller and reachable. For all these, I feel truly blessed and yeah, it’s been a significant year for me.

So I’d like to end this significant year by wishing all—from the bottom of my heart—a happy Christmas and a merry New Year in its truest sense! Hope your 2013 was equally significant for you to reflect back in years to come with fond memories and a smile on your face.

Irks Me to No End

26 Nov

Last week, I decided to go buy a replacement pair of golf shoes, having had mine stolen from the recent smash and grab incident. So I went to the mall. The salesman was trying to push various brands to me but I declined because aesthetically, the shoe designs did not appeal to me.

In the end, to save time, I showed him a picture of my lost shoe and said that if available, I’d like to buy the same again, Footjoy’s Greenjoy model. (I had taken a picture when I got the shoes for my birthday in April. Six months down the road, how could I know what happened to me can happen?)

Image

“Ahh. This is a Greenjoy model,” he exclaimed.

“We used to have it but now, no stock! But I can check for you,” he went on.

Amazing how a sentence can create two differing emotions at the same time. Popular models move very fast I guess. He was very helpful and suggested I leave my mobile for him, and he promised he will call—in two days’ time—whether the model is available or not. Too good to be true, I asked him again if he will call in two days and he reassured me, yes, two days, he will call. Definitely.

Such good service, I thought. Okay, two days is good before I make a decision.

Two days later…

The call never came. Then I happened to be in the neighborhood of a sports superstore and the lure of buying a new pair of shoes was just too tempting. So I checked out the superstore. My Greenjoy was available but one size bigger. Aarrgghhh… The frustration of it irks me; so close yet so far.

In the end, I bought something else that I could be comfy with, and at half the price of the Greenjoy pair, you could say I was happy with the choice.

Yesterday and that’s six days’ later from the word of promise, I finally received a text message from the salesman. It read as such: “Afternoon Angie, this is suresh fr golf house. rdgar”

An incomplete message… eeesh. Irked (again), I messaged him back, saying the message was incomplete and went straight to the point to ask if the shoe was available or not. He replied: “Sorry mistyped. no. stock. with. supplier. tq”

Wow. That sums up the whole thing! Is that a good follow-up after all that reassurance to call? Are the full-stops supposed to emphasize his point? Gee…. why didn’t he just capitalize all the words?

What irks me here is the promise (is this a standard salesman’s talk?) that he will call at a given specific date but never did. And ended the whole experience with just a text message; not even a phone call to soothe an irate (and disappointed) customer. I’m thinking if one cannot live up to the promise, one shouldn’t be making promises. It just leaves a bad impression at the end of the day.

Is There Hope for Our Society?

18 Nov

We live in a dangerous city. Everyday we hear and read news of unfortunate mishaps to innocent victims and the perpetrators get away with it. Gone were the days where I could just walk on the streets without fear. Nowadays, even when I drive, I have to be constantly alert, what more driving my big continental car.

Hubby and I have become another statistic to the ever increasing crime of smash and grab in our city. Only that this time, the car was parked whilst we were having dinner inside the restaurant after our golf game.

It was Sunday and there was a downpour after the usual monthly golf game. The group was to proceed to the restaurant about a half hour drive from the golf course. Rain had stopped by then and parking was sparse within the compound. We had no choice but to park outside, in front of the premise though. As there were parking attendants, we didn’t think twice about it.

Dinner was typical after a golf game, with hungry mouths chowing down on warm food on a cold night. The mood was also jovial with laughter and prize giving to the winners. After everyone dispersed, we stayed on for a bit longer, chatting with the remaining friends. But soon, we decided to leave.

Midway walking to the car, hubby said he had to go to the bathroom before the journey home. So I walked on to the MPV since I also had a set of keys. I opened the door and got it. Normally, the car lights are not turned on when the doors open. We just happen to set the car this way. I didn’t realize anything until the traffic drone was louder than normal to the ears.

I turned around, squinted my eyes and to my horror, saw the back window (behind the driver’s side) smashed! I looked down and felt my heart dropped. Both the Boston bags were gone. Shaken, I got down and checked the boot. Luckily both golf bags were still there. Phew!

Then I saw hubby approaching and waved frantically at him to alert him to the situation. I could sense him being very upset yet remained very quiet. He doesn’t rant like I would if I was riled. Perhaps I was too stunned to do so at that point in time. We summoned the parking attendants who then alerted their boss. The useless man was, well… useless. Not offering any apology or comfort, he just stood there and remained being useless.

We gave up. There’s nothing we could do but to hurry home before the threatening skies open up again with another downpour. While I am thankful both of us were not harmed, I seethed with annoyance that my orange ONOFF bag was gone; in it, my birthday present Footjoy shoes and team uniform! The same for hubby. Silently, I cursed whoever took our bags to hell twice over.

We got home and I got the duct tape while hubby went in search for a giant trash bag. He dusted away the glass shrapnels on the carpet as best as he could. It was obvious that the job was a professional one, with suction caps to physically remove the window once it cracked upon contact with whatever they used to break it. Why I say it was a professional job because there was very little evidence of a hard hit as glass pieces were not shattered and littered everywhere, inside or outside of the car.

That night was the quietest ever. Grim and upset, I felt violated. Thank goodness the night passed quickly.

Today I went about with my things, breaking away from routine a bit to clear the mind. It was after lunch when hubby received a call from a Good Samaritan! The lady said she found our two bags at a factory nearby. Details are sketchy but she said, there were stuff inside the bags and she found a business card (hubby’s) and called.

Maybe there is hope for our society. I hardly hear or come across someone like her who would go through the trouble like what she did for us. Maybe our stinky after-game clothes put the perpetrator off; maybe the things are really of no use to him/them; certainly the things are of no value to anyone in particular. Whatever it is, the fact that the lady called gives hope that society is sensitive enough to the victim(s).

Hubby is on his way now to collect the bags.

Amata Spring Country Club

9 Nov

Weaving through the local road and traffic, we find ourselves at the entrance of Amata Spring Country Club, a very Spanish decor clubhouse. Everyone’s excitement was evident right at the very first hole, taking tons of pictures, laughing and even monkeying around with silly poses.

The golf course was excellent. The greens impeccable, creating a whole new golfing experience. Our caddies were very attentive and overall, all agreed it was worth the cost. I decided to walk more as it was a buggy on-track course. Despite this intention, the numbers are not as impressive as the other courses: 10,936 steps, 293kcal and only 5.52km.

The strong wind at the golf course makes playing a whole new experience. You have to factor in the wind when teeing off, to carry the ball to where you want it to land.

The big highlight was the signature 17th Hole, Par 3 island. The surrounding water was quite an intimidating factor! Happy to say I made par on that hole!

We finished our game by one and after showering, the rain came down right after we loaded up the van. We have been very fortunate with the weather thus far for all our games. Not once I took out my sunblock to apply although some people will say, one should apply regardless when outdoors.

We are headed for lunch and shopping at Thaniya Plaza to continue day five.
