You Want a What?

30 Apr

Whenever we travel, we would buy stuff for the girls. But now with M1 at university, it is just M2 whom we have to consider. At KLIA prior to departure to Thailand last week, we spoke to her, reminding her of the usual study routine before asking what she would like.

Now having been to Bangkok last year in December, M2 knows more or less what we can get. But the cheeky one was very specific. She wanted to know if we will be heading to Siam Paragon. We may or may not because this is a golfing trip and the hotels where we are staying at are off the main shopping area.

Anyway, to entertain her, we prodded.

The usual stationery stuff? Pajamas?

None of the above apparently.

All she wanted was the Rolls Royce that is on display in Siam Paragon.

Hahaha… She is one funny girl.

It’s Been Good

23 Apr

Despite the lack of sleep and being awaken by the other rude hotel guests, our last game at Lam Lu Ka was superb. The weather was cloudy making the playing condition optimum; it should have been like this the past four days instead of hot and very hot.

The terrain was not too hilly and the pace was good. I think it’s a befitting end to cap yet another wonderful trip with our golf friends.

We are now at the airport, checked in, seated and connected to update our status because we have been starved of wifi connection. The one down side of this trip is the lack of free wifi at the hotel that we stayed in. Oh well.

It is a golf trip and I think we should learn to deal with the sparse connectivity.

So goodbye Bangkok again. I know we will be back. Soon.

My Goodness

23 Apr

I have heard and read many stories about the Chinese from mainland China on how rude they are as tourists when traveling abroad. I am sorry to say this about them but this morning, we experienced the rudeness firsthand.

At 5.15am before our alarm went off, we were woken up by a loud commotion in the hallway of our hotel floor.

Unable to stomach it, I grumpily opened my front door and stared daggers at these several people talking so loudly outside their room door, four doors away from us. My goodness! Can you crank it up a wee bit more so that the floors above and below can hear you as well? Sheesh.

There was absolutely no consideration at all for the other guests as they bickered for a good five minutes. When hubby opened our door again to shush them, they just stared at him as if he was the one creating the disturbance. Sheesh.

Obviously I cannot go back to sleep. Might as well get ready for our last game at Lam Lu Ka.

Foot Massages

22 Apr

Foot massages are the best thing to do after playing a round or two or three of golf under the hot sun. Foot massages are also recommended if you spent 10 hours walking or shopping daily.

There are many types of massages but I like the footie ones best if the legs are tired to the core. Coupled with a back and shoulder treatment, it is just so soothing. But somehow foot massages are only considered when I travel to Bangkok or Bali, never to the Western world. It didn’t cross my mind to have one when I was in Paris two years ago. But always whenever we go to Thailand or Bali.

Off to Bangkok

21 Apr

Banyan Golf Club was nice but hot and windy. The 18-hole walk today covered a lot of ups and downs over the hilly terrain. I felt totally drained and challenged with the wind factor. But I played better today than at Black Mountain.

Anyway after the game, we stopped for a quick duck noodle lunch before saying goodbye to Hua Hin. Our journey ahead to Bangkok should be about three hours and we got into Chinatown just in time for dinner.

Everyone agreed to Teochew food and we had a really good dinner at Tang Jai Yoo to go with the bottle of whiskey that none of us could pronounce the name. I think it’s best to head to the hotel, no more walking for the night, to rest.

Tomorrow we will play at Nikanti, a new golf course.

My Collection

12 Feb

Whenever I travel, I am always on the lookout for animal figurines to add to my collection besides pieces of paintings.

For example, whenever I visit Thailand, elephants are in my mind and I will be on the lookout for them. My last two trips to Thailand (Krabi in October and Bangkok in December), I found a mama and baby elephant pillow from the island and two clay elephants from the Chatuchak market to add to my collection.

Besides elephants, I also have—from all over the world—a few pigs, hippos, chickens, mandarin ducks and a wombat. But I find I cannot expand their family anymore because they are not so popular and easily available especially in the ASEAN countries that I often visit. So I started a new line: owls.

Now owls are more universal and boy, do they come in all shapes and sizes. My recent trip to Penang, amazingly yielded these newbies to my collection.

Mostly from the Owl Shop on Cannon Street with a few from a little booth at Straits Quay, these owls are really beautiful and adorable.

I like.

I foresee the owl collection growing by leaps and bounds to rival the elephants!

Do you have to stare?

Do you have to stare?

Back to School

13 Jan

After a long school holiday break, it’s back to school but only for M2. She went back to school yesterday. She has had a pretty non-productive holiday in my opinion, watching her videos and shows online every single day.

When she is not doing so, her iPod is perpetually stuck on her hands either for her to listen to music or to play games. While she may find this a good way to lull her time away, I still feel it’s unproductive; unlike M1 who came to the office to work for me to learn some responsibility and earn some pocket money at the same time.

Well, then again I cannot fault her for we never went anywhere after the Bangkok trip. The most is to the mall on weekends. So I am glad school has reopened and our lives will be back to the normal routine.

The Good Old Days

12 Dec

Not too long ago, M2 was querying me about vinyl albums and gramophones. She had been surfing and found these classics fascinating, even up to the point to suggest that we should buy a gramophone for the house. When we were in Bangkok recently, she saw these things in the mall and gave me a knowing look with a wiggle of her eyebrows. It’s quite amazing that such classics appeal to her.

The younger generation of today is so deprived of such classics with the advancement of technology. All they ever have to music are their iPods, the computer and the internet. Purchasing physical CDs are also being phased out slowly with the easy availability of music purchases online, iTunes or otherwise.

I had flashbacks about my childhood after her query. When I was young, I had access to my Dad’s vast collection of LP albums. When his good friend moved away, Dad inherited his (the friend’s) lot, making the collection even bigger! During the afternoons after school, I remember I used to open the cupboard and sieve through each and every album, admiring the cover design or photo. Somehow I ended up being the only one taking care of the collection – cleaning, playing and cataloging. It kept me occupied indoors when I didn’t feel like going outside to play. I even had one album of my very own: Donny Osmond – My Best to You!

Cringe or laugh you may but it was my mine. There was even a Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album! Eat that.

Sadly, after I moved out from the family home, the collection was neglected. And today, with Dad gone, I don’t remember what happened to them for they are definitely not at home anymore nor with me. A loss and a pity.

A Confession

11 Dec

I must confess I actually brought the MacBook Air along to Bangkok. Not so much for work but to play my games, played in Facebook and requires the Flash Player and the iPad does not have this capability.

So every night, back in our Junior suite after our outing, I would log on, first to collect the beans in Farm Heroes then to spin the Jackpot in Facebook. After this, I would attempt the other two, Candy Crush and Candy Crush Soda, to try my luck to move on. It was a good thing because these games on the laptop are easier and in Candy Crush, I managed to move on to the next chapter, Marmalade Meadow. I am now at level 750.

Homeward Bound

9 Dec

Our taxi ride from the hotel took 40 minutes without any real traffic woes and we got to the airport quite early. Suvarnabhumi Airport is just like an oversized beehive of activities! So many people and so crowded.

Queue to check in was okay but going through immigrations took a while. And like a tourist, we had to buy those last minute purchases. The girls each selected something and before we know it, we are boarding.

This time the B737-800 is new and we have personal screens! Yay. Until our next travel, I am glad we are homeward bound.
