A Sketch and a Plan, Part 2

12 Jul

It wasn’t difficult. I guess I am comfortable using the mini penknife to work on my totem pole of owls. I actually brought back my X-acto knife from the office just in case I needed an alternative tool. The nasal congestion is still there but in the quiet of things, I worked on the pole for almost three hours. It was rather therapeutic.

I can’t decide which owl looks cuter, the top, the middle two or the last one. Somehow upon close scrutiny, the bottom fella looks like a penguin! So does the top one!!! Hahahaha…

The finishing is not as fine as I had hope for but then again, with a penknife instead of carving tools, I should not expect much. But for a first attempt, I must say it’s a good effort. Definitely different from the original sketch but the gist of the plan is there.

I have decided I will go buy more balsa wood over the weekend and perhaps a set of carving tools too since I cannot find my old set. And will continue this streak of carving while the mood lasts. But I won’t get another long strip but little blocks and carve single owls. It should be fun.

A Sketch and a Plan

11 Jul

Who would have thought that having nasal congestion is bad? I thought it would cloud my senses but contrary to it, it brings out my inner creativity.

We were out at the mall yesterday and stumbled upon a new art supplies store. Like a kid let loose in a candy parlor, we explored the aisles to our hearts’ content, oohing and ahh-ing constantly. It was as if we have been deprived for so long.

I found some balsa wood and picked up a long piece; I decided to do a carving whilst M2 debated over a square and rectangle canvas. In the end, she chose the square one. On my prodding, she decided to try her hands at painting. So exciting!

We came home and after a good rest and dinner, I began my new project. For three solid hours, I did not touch my iPad and sat at the dining table to work out a sketch. Then I  whipped out my trusty Swiss Army penknife because I couldn’t find my carving tools and did this… a totem pole of owls.

Stay tuned for its progress and finished product!

I Could Get Used to This

26 Jan

It was another three-day weekend (the first being the New Year stretch) as yesterday was a replacement holiday for Thaipusam which was celebrated on Sunday. But going somewhere is just not viable especially when it is only two weeks away to Chinese New Year. So we went about doing our stuff over the three days.

I got most of my Chinese New Year preparation done, played a round of golf, had a massage, went shopping and basically enjoyed the three day break with hubby and M2. M2 completed her art assignment, reproducing an existing packaging and I think she did a good job!

I also caught up with my virtual games, bull-dozing my way from Level 1460 (Divine Diner, Episode 98) into Dessert Desert for Candy Crush and 844 for Monster Blasters. However, still stuck at Level 854 for Farm Heroes, 603 for Soda and 56 for Jelly. But I’m not worried.

Come next week, we will be having yet another three-day weekend because Monday is another public holiday. Back-to-back three-day breaks! I could get used to this. Am pretty sure those stuck levels will be a thing of the past by the time next weekend comes along.

We get to eat the Kit-Kat after this!

Killing Time

5 Oct

We took our time at breakfast, savoring every bite at a leisurely pace. But one can only eat so much and so slow. The rain kept at a steady pace that is mildly annoying. To go or not to go to the islands?

Bored, we started playing with our food. M1 was counting watermelon seeds when a brilliant idea hit her! Pick the seeds out from a dragon fruit.

So she started on this and I did the same. Soon another idea hit me and I got very busy with the toothpick.

A fine time killing exercise I would say.

Staying Busy

11 Sep

OldParr2Progress in Candy Crush has hit a snag in Crunchy Courtyard. I was happy when the app finally opened in Facebook on the laptop and was quickly breezing through the levels but now find myself stuck at Level 677. Eeesh. Initially I thought it was a good alternatively to Farm Heroes when I was stuck at (the Farm’s) Level 451. But now… Sigh.

Farm Heroes’s Level 451 took me sometime to get through and when I finally did, happiness was shortlived as I got stuck at Level 454. Last week, there was so much frustration attempting these games, I decided to stop them for a breather and just stay away from my devices. Turning to my Old Parr bottles to paint, I finally completed the two bottles that I had painted the base earlier. Upon completion, I gave the bottles to my friend in exchange for another two bottles to continue this soothing activity when aggravation kicks in as far as my games are concerned.

Then, as always, when you least expect it, success! Managed to pass Level 454 but stuck at Level 460 now. Maybe I should stick to painting the four bottles that I have awaiting me.

Taking a Break from the Break

25 Aug

OldParrOver the weekend, I decided to just unplug as much as possible from my comforts and routine: the iPad Games, Jennifer Probst, kids, golf and even hubby. I immersed myself in my art.

My good friends managed to finish four bottles of Old Parr and handed them to me to paint. So I did.

I think the break from the break did a world of good for me in terms of self-satisfaction, appreciation of some peace and basically having some quality time to explore my creativity.

I have completed the base for two bottles and so far, so good.

Fifty Shades of Grey

1 Aug

BottleArtIt was a good dinner with friends after a golf game. As usual, a bottle of whiskey was brought along to be polished off with the meal. This time, it wasn’t the usual single malt but blended whiskey instead, Old Parr.

The bottle was very pretty with stained glass features and we talked about creating art on the bottle. I decided to take the bottle home and put my creativity to some good use.

The next evening, creativity kicked in and soon I had a sketch and a plan. I showed the girls and asked them what colors should I use?

Both chorused, “Fifty shades of grey!”

Goodness! Even children know about this book. No, I did not buy nor thought about buying the book to read. Back to my art, I felt fifty shades of grey was too much and decided on it being bright and colorful.

Stay tuned for the final result of my efforts, that is, if I can continue with this sudden interest instead of constantly working on Farm Heroes, Candy Crush and Zookeeper Battle.

Another Day at Another Museum

24 Jul

The walk from the train station was quite an energy zapper! Thank goodness for the two-day museum pass for I wait in a shorter line to get inside Musee d’Orsay.

I must say the crowd here is less frenzied. There is a sense of order, respect, awe and hush as I admire Van Gogh, Seurat and Gauguin’s work, along with the few in the room with me.

But as I walk through the rooms, the stillness in the air changed as I entered the Impressionist exhibit.

My heart palpitates as I set my eyes on Claude Monet’s work. He inspires me to no end! Makes me want to whip out my sketch pad and draw haystacks or towering poplar trees.

The other Impressionists somehow do not move me as much, I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because since college I have been fascinated with Monet and his style.

I went back to view Van Gogh again hoping that maybe he will inspire me. But the crowd has grown and the noise level has increased. Too noisy to be moved and the guards are more strict (than at the Louvre) when it comes to photography. Loudly, they reprimanded adults like little kids and for all to turn around to see, when they spot a smartphone taken out taking aim at a painting! Wow. Authority at its best here.

I feel very tired at this point. Yawn; must be from the earlier walk here. By 12.15pm I came out from the museum! 4080 steps, 1.43km and only 79.7 calories. Could it be the speed of 0.9kph that is causing the tiredness?

After grabbing a quick baguette bite, I dispensed with stereotype and took out my mini umbrella to shield me from the intense heat as I make my way over to the other Musee de l’Orangerie. But alas! It’s closed. Disappointed I had to change plans.

And from here on, things started to spiral downwards. My pedometer was not on for the last hour and a half. So earlier figures are way off!!! And suddenly the skies are turning grey with rain threatening.

I find myself wandering towards the Eiffel Tower and detoured to Musee du quai Branly in case it does rain.

Branly is pretty cool from the architecture point of view. Funky walkways, curvy and no straight walls. But a bit psychedelic if you asked me. You have to really watch where you walk else you might walk into a display! The displays… gosh, they are pretty creepy. Artifacts are not my cup of tea. Back to the building and its shades. Man it’s really playing on your eyes or it is really dark outside.

I peeked out a window and yikes, it is raining! I guess I am staying put for awhile…

It didn’t just rain, it poured. For situations like these, I am so glad I am wearing boots. Taking a risk, I made my way to the Eiffel Tower. The rain has subsided to a drizzle and like yet another sucker for the ‘been there, done that’ syndrome, I had to take a picture of me and the tower. Pretty dramatic sky in the background.

By now, my options to continue on seems rather uncomfortable. The bottom half of my pants are drenched and the energy sapped even more. The appeal of the cooling temperature is not enough. It is only 3pm and I want to crawl into bed to rest….

But the spirit persisted and I sauntered on to the Trocadero! Along the way, I discovered Musee d’Art Moderne and enjoyed more paintings. When I was done, I came out to hot weather. Eeeks. The mini umbrella proved to be useful in rain or shine conditions. So glad I brought it along.

Anyway, I made my way through Champ-Élysées and got onto a train and headed back to the hotel.

What a day! Despite missing an hour and a half of data captured, today I walked 19,877 steps and close to 7km, burning 391.8 calories.

Dang, I need a beer!

Sculptures at the Louvre

22 Jul

I know it’s a sculpture but in reality, does the leaf always stay in place to discreetly cover over, you know… there?

Day at the Museum

22 Jul

It’s another hot day and a very long queue to see Mona Lisa!

The hubby and the brother went off for their business meeting, so I am left to discover Paris on my own. Donning my super comfy Blundstone walking boots instead of sandals, I took the train from Gare de L’est to Musee du Louvre.

I am determined to visit the Louvre this time as I missed it on my last trip here, back in 2008. And being a single person tourist today, things are moving quite fast. Good.

The buzz inside is so reverberating. Didn’t realize that the lure of art is so strong for people from all over the world.

Sculptors amazes me. They get so right into the details of the anatomy right down to the butt crack! Lovely cheeks, no? This was just a small detour before the big attraction.

Ceiling art are also amazing pieces of work. How do these artists endure the neck cramp painstakingly getting the details for us to appreciate? I get a neck cramp by just looking at all these!

Like every other ardent tourist, I made my way to get a glimpse of the Mona Lisa.

Alas! Being a short person I can’t even get close. This is the closest! I think it is overrated. At least cameras are allowed unlike the Sistine Chapel where everyone has to be hushed while being ushered in.

Mona looks green, probably from all the attention and nausea from the noise and smell. Hahaha….

Why is she such a fascination? I think it is more of the ‘been there, seen it, done that’ syndrome that people are thronging Room 6.

The crowd is just too much and I am getting a headache from it all. So am plugged into my music to drown out all the museum excitement which I don’t really need as I explore and jot my observations along the way.

I attempted again, sucker for the ‘been there, done that’! And succeeded to get a closer picture.

I find this picture comical. How does one go to war without any loincloth or something to cover that part of the anatomy?! Aren’t they putting themselves at risk for such exposure? Tsk! Tsk!

It is interesting to note also that while sculptures are crafted with so much details on the body muscles and hair on the head and crotch, all sculptures do not have armpit hair! Maybe this is deemed ugly that can mar the beauty of the body?

I have been wandering through the many halls housing many themes and era of art pieces. Three hours into my exploration, I have walked 2.78km and took 7948 steps and burnt 164.1 calories. Yes, I am one of those who likes to record my physical efforts. I lost my pedometer awhile back but thank goodness for the iPhone, I have an app on it to do the job!
