I decided to take a break today from all my iPad games, reads, kids, work and just go play golf and hang out with my golf buddies. It’s been a busy and stressful week, I think I kinda deserve the break.
Not a Wasted Weekend
11 Aug
The wifi at home at sucks! Thus affecting the weekend attempts at my games. I could not play Candy Crush on the laptop smoothly or even at all, rendering a short-lived happiness of the new chapter opening prior to the weekend.
Then my Farm Heroes, with its latest update for the iPad, keeps quitting upon launch and wasting lives. The frustration knows no bounds, I tell you.
Maybe I shouldn’t play so many games that rely on the wifi and go back to reading, particularly my Nora Roberts.
A small consolation, however, was an improvement in my world ranking for Zookeeper Battle at 16,598. Not bad…
But the biggest story happened on Sunday. At my golf club’s monthly medal challenge for this month, I emerged the winner in the Ladies category! This makes up for all that frustration as the last two events are definitely significant achievements overshadowing the wifi issues.
It’s Been Good
29 JulHubby and I are not working the last two days because of the public holidays. We have had a long four day weekend and the girls have a week off from school this week. Unlike in previous years where we’d take the opportunity to go away, this time, we decided not to go anywhere and just enjoy the city. So far, we’ve been having fun, doing simple things together – going to the movies, eating different kinds of food, shopping, sleeping and just being carefree.
We also managed to do separate things – hubby and I golfed with friends, M1 visiting and hanging out with her friends and M2 catching up with her TV shows. Bottom line, everyone is happy.
Today, we take a short road trip to a fishing village just to eat some seafood. Awesome meal awaits us. Then we come home to sleep it off so that tonight, we dine with my sibling and his family.
Goodbye Kuching
7 JulThe golf course turned out much better than the day before. The night before after much drinking to complement a satisfying dinner, suddenly a bet came on, pitting me for a match play against one of the elderly gentleman.
The stakes were high with the odds favoring me; dollar notes were slapped on the table loudly and the bets were on me to win outright! This level of confidence stems from the fact that I played extremely well on the first day against KGS.
The poor uncle; he felt betrayed by his buddies. What’s in it for me? I will pocket half the one thousand dollars pool money and the remaining half to be split among the ‘investors’.
That night I think both of us could not sleep. I know I didn’t; kept waking up every hour! Then at breakfast I learnt that neither did he! Hah!
The next day the battle was on and I had a massive headache from the restless night. But there’s no turning back. The show must go on as money has been collected already.
So to ensure that the game was exciting and fair, we each had a caddy instead of typically just one per buggy (unlike in Thailand). The sun was not too hot, I felt good and mentally strong. I started off with a bogey and a par but then blew the next two holes.
I must admit I wasn’t nervous, I was relaxed yet very focused but felt I made too many silly mistakes. I paced myself, remained focus and not be distracted by external elements.
However, by the end of the first nine, I was two down. The uncle felt good but I sensed he was mentally weak because he kept lamenting about his mistakes. While I made mistakes too, I did not harp on them.
The sun finally came out and it took the toll on both of us. Being two down and three to go, I fought back hard. And won the two holes to level up with one to go. With the Par 5 being the last and deciding hole, I was very cautious as my earlier Par 5s did not yield good results.
Both of us played the same strategy: laying up to cross the creek and landing our balls next to the bunker on the right of the green. Both chipped onto the green and one of us just had to hole out to have the outright win.
Luckily my ball was closer to the hole than uncle’s. His attempt rolled passed the cup and caught the downward slope and rolled away. I had my chance then! Seeing the line and drop, my attempt unfortunately duplicated the same of his. Eeesh. All he had to do now was to put it in and force me to make an error under the pressure.
But he missed! Ooh… My heart was palpitating. Now I had to put it in and claim victory.
My caddy lined up my ball and told me to go right of the cup by just a ball’s width. I took my time, addressed the ball and putted… and watched my ball rolled pass the hole by two ball’s width.
We had squared the stiff competition!
Such fun and thrill it was. Somehow both of us were happy and relieved that there were no losers from this.
So I leave Kuching with very good memories of this group golf outing. I made more new friends, bonded better with the existing friends and saw further improvements in my golfing ability.
I look forward to my next golf escapade and now head back home with happy memories.
Goodbye Kuching, thanks and it’s been fun.
In Between 4.45am and 5.30am
7 JulIt is our last day in Kuching for our final game, so an early morning wake up call is required. No it’s not 4.45am or 5.30am but in between, 5.15am. Rather odd but necessary for breakfast and the bus ride.
Yesterday the weather was extremely hot, the greens dry and the golfing conditions were not the best in comparison to the day before. I guess one can’t have it good all the time. But the company, the food and the camaraderie has been exceptionally good so this makes up for it.
Let’s hope today’s experience will leave us with good memories. Everyone is already talking about planning the next trip!
It Was Worth It
5 JulThe bus was late. Eeesh. Golfers are the most prompt people when it comes to being on time. We were to play a friendly interclub game with the ladies from Kelab Golf Sarawak. Thankfully, the ride was not too long and in a blink of an eye, KGS appeared.
A little disorganized, we unloaded and got to the changing room. Then before we could even catch our breath and say ‘Hello’ or have a group photo with the host team, we were rushed to the tee box for a two point start at 6.54am.
I must say eventually, the company was great, the golf course excellent and the weather beautiful. One cannot asked for more.
The best part, I played one of my best game ever, coming in as the best nett player and the best player from our side.
I can conclude then that waking up at 4.45am was worth it! Would I do it again? Well, let’s have this never before achievement remain as a highlight and stay as a high for the time being. We have another game tomorrow albeit no more an interclub challenge and tomorrow is another day, another game.
Worse Than 5.30am
5 JulWhen one travels for golf, the normal wake up time is 5.30am. But today, it is worse than 5.30, we had a 4.45am wake up call! My goodness. Why at this horrid ungodly hour?
Well, we have to take in breakfast then the bus ride to the golf course. Today, we tee off at 6.54am, the main reason for waking up so early. The golf course had better be worth it.
And Off We Go
4 JulThe adventure started at the golf club with 14 of us meeting there to take the van while the other 14 made their own arrangements to meet us at the airport. Promptly, the golf bags were loaded and off we went. Traffic was rather heavy but we got there on time.
The gargantuan airport was, well, gargantuan. Indeed, retail shops greeted us first before we found the check in counters. By then the rest appeared. Luckily, there wasn’t much of a crowd for our flight and although time-consuming, things were in order for the check in.
Then everyone decided to track to the Premier Lounge for lunch. Now here, service was a wee bit short-handed as the two personnel had to suddenly deal with 28 guests at once. After a lengthy process, some finally got in while some decided to go elsewhere.
To cut a long story short, departure was on time. The airport was big but I was too busy to ensure I was going in the right direction than to notice all the retail shops. I guess I wasn’t dazzled as I thought I would be. Oh well.
Here I Go Again!
4 JulI don’t know why the Whitesnake song, “Here I Go Again” popped into my head as I get ready to go on yet another golf excursion. I suppose the ‘Here I Go Again’ is apt considering this is my third golfing trip this year. Hardly a drifter like the song implied, this time, I am traveling in a big group. 28 people to be precise, myself included, unlike my previous trips with a much smaller group.
The people are not strangers but friends and all members of our golf club and we are off to Kuching, Sarawak. It is rather exciting for me for several reasons.
Firstly, the group. Mostly golf buddies but going for a trip together for the first time. It will be interesting. The second being, to Kuching. I’ve never been to that side of the country before and it will definitely be an eye-opener for me on top of an enriching experience, I hope.
And thirdly, heading out via KLIA2 (instead of KLIA or LCCT), the spanking new gargantuan airport. I hear it’s akin to an airport in a shopping mall with offerings that will dazzle the daylights out of anyone and everyone.
All in all, I am looking forward to the getaway, bonding with my 27 fellow golfers and 3 rounds of golf.
Oh No! My Pants Don’t Fit
6 MayYou know you had a good holiday when you come home and find that your work pants don’t fit. I was aghast! I had to suck it in—not a whole lot just a tad (but still!)—to wear my work pants yesterday. Oh dear… I thought with four rounds of golf in Batam, sweating it all out under the sweltering heat, I would be fine. And it’s not that I ate excessively, my portions were normal. I didn’t even drink beer on the course on this trip.
But looking back, the four rounds was all buggy on course unlike a month ago in Chiangmai, the three rounds, we walked and walked and walked. Now comparing the stats – in Chiangmai, it was close to 20,000 steps each time at the golf course, and this is not inclusive of the before and after game walking. All in, I’d say a good 23,000 steps a day, more than the 10,000 steps quota for a day.
In Batam, it was slightly over 10,000 steps but with the before and after, I’d say it wasn’t even close to 14,000 steps each day. I remember by the third day, I decided not to wear my pedometer because the earlier stats were not very impressive and I did not want this to distract me.
Could it be the food? Or the drinking? We had hard liquor for four nights in a row, single malt and blended whiskeys: 12-year old Chivas Regal, Glenfiddich, 12-year old Dewar’s and Label 5. We drank as well in Chiangmai but that was a 4 day/3 night trip versus this recent one of 5 days and 4 nights. By virtue of an extra day and an extra bottle of whiskey, my pants don’t fit? My personal trainer would have a fit if she knew!
Looks like I have to do something about it and it’s not buying new pants nor skipping going to the office! Sigh…
