Life of A Crustacean

22 Nov

Our latest pet, Luna the crayfish has been a delight for us. But it is still very shy. From the internet we learnt that crayfishes need something to hide in or under. So hubby put a mini flower pot in the little aquarium to double up as its hiding place because we didn’t have time to get a driftwood for her.

And it’s worked out well. Luna has even mastered the art of manoeuvring into her homely cave skilfully every time she needs to chill in there by moving backwards into it; call it a reverse park if you may. So efficient and practical.

Sometimes if we accidentally spooked her, she would reverse further in and plaster herself, back in, to the back of the pot and raise her claws as if in defense. We think this fascinating Kung fu posture is unlikely if it was a driftwood instead of the pot. Crouching mantis, hidden prawn… Hehehe.

For food, Luna eats live little prawns. There is one surviving food that has become her friend. I call it Silly Prawn and this little crustacean is quite the clown. I tried to video Luna last week and guess what, Silly Prawn video bombed my attempt! Check out this video and wait for Silly Prawn…

Happy Birthday My Senior Citizen Pet!

11 Nov

Today our Rooney turns nine. That’s 63 years old in dog years! Dang, he’s old. No wonder of late he has been behaving like a senior citizen.

He may be grumpy, annoying and demanding all the time but he is also silly, goofy and lovable. He breathes heavily, slobbers, snores and farts unabashedly, loves the color orange (any toy of this color will do for him) and enjoys fish-based treats, apples, peanut shells (yes, the shells) and even bird seeds. Quite the clown our official pet number one. Fish-based treats? Wait, is he a cat or a dog? Hahaha…

Nobody said having an English bulldog as a pet was easy for we have had our shares of difficulty with his skin problems, stubbornness and laziness. He doesn’t believe in exercise although he enjoys jumping at soap bubbles occasionally. On top of all these, he is also very OCD for a dog! We still have not resolved the washing machine drainage pipe issue.

But we love him regardless. Happy birthday Roo!

Daily Visits

10 Nov

The birds have been coming daily and it sure is nice to have my coffee with chirping in the background. Sometimes it is not just the birds that visit.

Yesterday somebody’s cat was lurking ready to pounce on the feathered ones. And the squirrel, I suspect it’s Sammy, the one who eats Rooney’s leftover senior citizen food, was present too, stealing in some bites! Why? Did Rooney not leave any crumbs behind?

Maybe it’s the taste of the birdseeds for it certainly can’t be the birdhouse because I don’t see any of these critters chilling in front of it. Whatever it is, I am just simply glad they are visiting on a daily basis and thoroughly enjoy them.

A New Family Member

7 Nov

After the demise of the Snickerdoodles, keeping pet water or pet rocks are no fun. It’s just so boring. Over the weekend, we had an impulse to buy a new pet for the little aquarium but we didn’t want another school of fishes. We were at the mall and debated what we should acquire.

And… we bought ourselves a red crayfish! The purchase was very exciting and we couldn’t wait to get home to settle it down. But another big debate ensued on what to name the newest family member.

We ended up naming it Luna. Say hi to Luna everybody!

The End of the Snickerdoodles

3 Nov

It’s sad that the last of the Snickerdoodles died. Somehow the little aquarium just cannot have a thriving community. I think we have to accept the fact that we can only keep some pet rocks or pet water in there.

And I think we will do just that for the time being. RIP little fishes, pet heaven is a much better place for you with the others.

Rainy Season

28 Oct

The weather has changed. I would say it’s the beginning of the rainy season. And when it rains in the evening, official pet number one does not get to come out to play in the garden, like last night. Poor fella.

If it rains during the day, neither does the tortoises. The birds would also not get their food. Sad. Golfers too, do not appreciate this kind of weather. Hubby has had a couple of morning games delayed due to rain. I would be agitated too if caught in this situation.

But it sure is nice for me to be horizontal on the sofa in the living room. With a nice read in hand and my hot tea within reach, I actually enjoy such days because the temperature is just so comfortable to relax and not move. Most of the time, I would fall into a slumber.

The ‘Kaepoh’

27 Oct

‘Kaepoh’ means busybody in the Hokkien dialect and official pet number one, Rooney is totally one. With the recent birdhouse set up in the garden, the ‘Kaepoh’ was sniffing at the base and the empty birdseed shells scattered on the ground yesterday evening. And when hubby was replenishing the birdseeds, he wanted to eat some!

Several nights ago, when the tortoises were given some juicy watermelon, the ‘Kaepoh’ wanted some too, barking in demand to be given a share as well. Sheesh…

Silly ‘Kaepoh’ of a senior citizen who cannot stand the fact that others eat and he does not. Maybe he should be labelled a glutton as well.

Again and Again

24 Oct

The birds finally came. And they continued to come over the weekend as long as the food was replenished. But they also fought, almost territorial behavior. There was even one who perched on the pole of the little birdhouse and checked out the inside as if contemplating moving in. Nice!

This morning the boisterous chirping greeted me when I came downstairs. And I was pleasantly surprised with the sight – nine little birds, sitting on the wall. I wasn’t quick enough to capture them on my iPhone.

Suddenly along came a busybody of a squirrel who decided to scurry over to see what the fuss was about. Now this squirrel is not the one whom I call Sammy. Sammy hangs out near at the kitchen side of the house and comes around when Rooney does not finish his food, which is often. Sammy is fine with leftover senior citizen food. This other squirrel is new.

It hopped from the frangipani tree onto the wall, causing the birds to fly off, did a quick sniff at the seeds and just as quickly left. Now if it comes around more often, I may have to give it a name too. We shall see…

One little brave birdie stood firm

New Visitors

20 Oct

It was a pleasant surprise when I heard the sound of birds chirping yesterday morning and this morning too. Yes! They are back. The little bird house and the tray of bird seeds finally lured them to our garden.

But to our horror, it isn’t just birds that came. Although it’s at a different part of the garden, hubby discovered a monitor lizard! Gulp. The four-legged fella was roaming on the less frequented side of the garden a couple of days ago. It quickly slipped through the grill and into the drain when it spotted hubby approaching. Yikes.

Looks like the tortoises cannot come out to the garden to roam freely for a while until we do something about this intruder.

Two little birds…

and then, there were four!

A New Home

10 Oct

I’ve been wanting to buy a new home for the birds ever since the old one was disposed of. And over the weekend, the opportunity presented itself when we had to drive pass the shop that sells all kinds of bird houses and garden furniture.

There were many choices but we opted for something not too big and this time, a white abode instead of brown.

Let’s hope the birds will appreciate our choice and come by soon! We’ve even put out a tray of bird seeds to ensure they do.
