These are not Toys

6 Dec

You’ll be amazed the things one can find from shopping online. Just about every week or every other week, I would buy something from my favorite online site. Initially, it was a lot of purchases pertaining to carving to assist my hobby.

Then when my setup was complete, I was still doing online shopping but the purchases became toys for official pet number one, health related items and useful household appliances among others.

Recently, I bought these colorful rubber devices. Have a guess of what there are. You’d be surprise to learn that these things are not toys but actually umbrella holders!

It’s quite amazing how it works, utilizing the law of Physics. From now on, going out on rainy days and wondering where to put the wet umbrella would no longer be a problem. I love online shopping!

Spring Cleaning

1 Dec

It sure is nice when one does spring cleaning and stumble upon nostalgic things.

Every year, at the end of the school year, we would do a spring cleaning at home especially to gather all the school text books to give away. Usually we would pass them on to friends who have kids who could use the books the following school year. This year M2 and I decided to also clear out some old toys.

My goodness! Over the years, my two girls have acquired quite a fair bit of toys and plushies. They are much older now and hardly play with these anymore. So it’s time to give these away. I would vet through the conditions before putting them in the ‘give away’ box.

And from the nightly efforts, I discovered some of MY old toys! My Playmobil set. My goodness. I have kept them all these years, hoping my children would play with them. And they did.

It was pretty nostalgic. We had fun playing with them! And yes, we are still keeping them.

Imaginary Friends

8 May

Friend

When I was young, I had imaginary friends who were very interesting and loyal. Way cooler than real friends, they were constantly by my side and totally understands me. I never knew this trait is also evident in my children until I was spring-cleaning their room recently.

It was a Sunday and we decided to revamp the girls’ room a little to create two study corners. As boxes of toys were moved, we had to decide whether to give them away or keep them elsewhere to create space. In the midst of this, I stumbled upon a note written by M2 when she was young.

“Oh… Shaun! That’s her imaginary friend!” chuckled M1.

“Really? I never knew!” I said.

We opened the folded note and read it.

It was hilarious!

I must salute M2, for her imaginary friend was way, way more interesting than mine! And letters… classic. I never wrote letters to my imaginary friends.

A New Cow

28 Feb

Two weeks ago, I spent a girls’ weekend with M1 and M2 when hubby went off to play golf. It was our usual routine at the mall: a nice lunch, a leisure browse at the bookstore, a quick survey at the pet shop and fulfilling the buying stuff agenda but no major shopping. When we got to the pet shop, we decided to buy Roo a new toy since his cow has been in tatters while his sheep was mutilated beyond use. After much debate, M1 chose the same cow as before. It was a simple rationale: official pet number one loves the color orange and he adored his old cow, even in tatters, so the new cow would definitely be revered as much.

Indeed. That night, we had a happy Roo, tired out from playing with his new cow.

Barbie is Ugh!

1 Oct

It used to be (and probably still is) every girls’ dream to have a Barbie doll. But not in my household. I remember when the girls were younger we had to deal with this every festivity time. Whenever Christmas and their birthdays came around, they would cringe when the wrappers are ripped to discover yet another Barbie. Ugh!

But as the Barbie dolls were given with a good intention, we could not say no to the gifts. So the girls ended up having five Barbies at one point in their early years. Ugh!

Somehow Barbie just does not rake it up there with other characters or plush toys. She is not lovable, not huggable, too rigid and pointy, and according to M2, creepy as well! Recently I asked her what her thoughts are of Barbie.

Thinking for a minute M2 then said, “Barbie? Euww…. her butt is so big like… like Kim Kardashian’s!” Of course back then, Kimmy was not a household name. But still, the mention of the resemblance had me laughing uncontrollably. Despite our feelings towards Barbie, poor her to be in the same league as Kimmy! Ugh!

Subsequently, I also asked M1 for her sentiments of Barbie. “Euw!” was the first thing she said, the exact expression as M2’s! She then thought about it for awhile before concluding that while she enjoyed Barbie’s clothes (and not Barbie), she too, thought Barbie was freaky especially from the anatomical point of view. How can her measurements be deemed perfect? Ugh!

My apologies to all the little girls who fancy Barbie, for us, Barbie is just ugh!

Can Dogs See Color?

18 Jul

This is about official pet number one, Rooney. We think he likes the color orange or rather, he only sees the color orange.

Why I say this because the toys that we get him can range from many colors but the orange colored ones last the longest playtime. A replacement frisbee for the orange one—in the same shape and size but in green—did not even warrant a day’s play. A blue & white bone hardly gnawed to the core while anything orange lasts so long!

When we discovered his preference for the color and not the object, both M1 and M2 would be mindful to select an orange colored toy for him whenever we visit the pet shop.

His recent orange & yellow chicken was chewed till the guts came out. Then the cat, which was a darker shade of orange, lasted less than the chicken. I surgically gave the cat another live but since then, with its orange shade turning brownish, the reincarnated cat has been neglected.

Currently, he’s just all over his basketball. At the right bright shade of orange, we all agreed that he only sees the color orange.

It’s Not Fair

7 Jul

When official pet number one, Rooney, was a puppy, both girls complained that he was getting more toys and things than them.

We were often queried, “How come he gets something every week?! Every week!!! What about us? We have needs too you know. It’s not fair.”

Well, sometimes life can be unfair…
