Iron Challenge 2022

17 Jan

After two years of postponement, the club finally held this year’s Iron Challenge tournament yesterday. In 2020, it did not happen because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Then in 2021, it was scheduled but only to be derailed by the pandemic again. Thankfully, this year with no more lockdowns, the tournament was held.

So how did I fare?

Well, I think I did okay save for a few holes. And this is always the case. One or two tee shots going errant, landing in the rough on the left or right next to a tree root, or a couple of duff shots are enough to derail the momentum and return with an ugly scorecard.

But it was good fun, and I have always enjoyed this tournament. This year I was lucky and came out a winner in the Lucky Draw contest during the prize presentation. A bag of iron covers! I sure feel like a winner with this unexpected good fortune.

My lucky draw prize this year!

I look forward to the tournament again next year.

Consistently Inconsistent

21 Feb

Just when I thought golf is fun again, back to using my driver and woods, reality sucks. After the Iron Challenge Tournament on Sunday, I played a game on Tuesday and couldn’t get used to teeing off with the driver.

I have been so in tune with my 4-iron to tee off that switching back to the driver felt so strange. My coordination was off and consistently inconsistent. There were times when I could fly the ball off the tee, the ball would go so very far. But when I couldn’t launch it, the ball would just sputter off the tee to a pathetic 20 or 30 feet in front! Terrible.

As a result of this problem, I lost five balls playing at the Lakes course! What a confidence spoiler. Hopefully this setback is a temporary thing. I need to play more games to get my rhythm again for better golfing days ahead.

Bedrock Bottom

16 Jul

I have said many times golf is a funny game. I thought I had hit rock bottom several weeks ago with my inability to play despite all these years at it. Then I managed to bounce back soon after and I thought from there on, it can’t get any worse and I should be on the upwards trend but guess what? I was wrong!

There is an even lower level than rock bottom and it’s called bedrock bottom…

Over the weekend, I participated in my club’s Annual Championship, a two-day tournament. And there’s just no words to describe the performance especially on Day One. Put it this way, it was as though I just picked up the game a month ago and bravely played in a crucial tournament that really tested one’s ability and mental capabilities.

Although there was only one OB’ed shot, one obvious shank that resulted in a lost ball, six dunked balls into the ponds, several duffs and mis-hits, these costly mistakes were enough to do me in.

The weather was perfect, the shoes were comfortable, the tennis elbow wasn’t even acting up so there’s really no reason to do all those that I did. Sigh… I am at a loss for words on this.

Thankfully on Day Two, I played better and restored some confidence. Maybe I am not quite ready yet to play competitive golf? After this experience, I hope there won’t be another undiscovered level beyond bedrock bottom to my golfing ability, that’s all I can say!
