Life of A Crustacean, Part 2

25 Nov

I think Silly Prawn became food because I can’t seem to find it in the aquarium. It must have become food because Luna was out from her cave two days’ ago and being silly, striking a pose of wanting to scale the aquarium height. Was Silly Prawn terrorizing her?

This morning, I spotted another silly prawn hoovering over an upside down one. Can’t be Silly Prawn, can it? And looks Silly Prawn II is in the making because Luna is back in her cave!

Between the crustaceans, visiting birds and official pet number one, life amidst them creatures sure is entertaining.

Spot the prawns!

Save me from Silly Prawn!

Life of A Crustacean

22 Nov

Our latest pet, Luna the crayfish has been a delight for us. But it is still very shy. From the internet we learnt that crayfishes need something to hide in or under. So hubby put a mini flower pot in the little aquarium to double up as its hiding place because we didn’t have time to get a driftwood for her.

And it’s worked out well. Luna has even mastered the art of manoeuvring into her homely cave skilfully every time she needs to chill in there by moving backwards into it; call it a reverse park if you may. So efficient and practical.

Sometimes if we accidentally spooked her, she would reverse further in and plaster herself, back in, to the back of the pot and raise her claws as if in defense. We think this fascinating Kung fu posture is unlikely if it was a driftwood instead of the pot. Crouching mantis, hidden prawn… Hehehe.

For food, Luna eats live little prawns. There is one surviving food that has become her friend. I call it Silly Prawn and this little crustacean is quite the clown. I tried to video Luna last week and guess what, Silly Prawn video bombed my attempt! Check out this video and wait for Silly Prawn…

A New Family Member

7 Nov

After the demise of the Snickerdoodles, keeping pet water or pet rocks are no fun. It’s just so boring. Over the weekend, we had an impulse to buy a new pet for the little aquarium but we didn’t want another school of fishes. We were at the mall and debated what we should acquire.

And… we bought ourselves a red crayfish! The purchase was very exciting and we couldn’t wait to get home to settle it down. But another big debate ensued on what to name the newest family member.

We ended up naming it Luna. Say hi to Luna everybody!

The End of the Snickerdoodles

3 Nov

It’s sad that the last of the Snickerdoodles died. Somehow the little aquarium just cannot have a thriving community. I think we have to accept the fact that we can only keep some pet rocks or pet water in there.

And I think we will do just that for the time being. RIP little fishes, pet heaven is a much better place for you with the others.

The Snickerdoodles, Part 3

26 Sep

Just when I thought the little aquarium was fine, disaster has struck. Early July when I last posted about them, the community had eight Bettas and rather unhappy. As I sort of left them alone hoping they will change their mind, suddenly we find the Snickerdoodles down to three! Dear oh dear…

Hubby thinks the poor Bettas just expired their shelf life, hence the demise. Whatever it is, I think we will not replenish the aquarium anymore. It’s morbid to think that it’s a waiting game now…

The Snickerdoodles, Part 2

7 Jul

Of late the happy looking group of Bettas does not look too happy. They don’t seem to swim in a group and looked very separated. Last night I was observing them and took some pictures.

Some were at this corner and that corner and even resting on the pebbles. Sleeping? I hope they are fine.

The Snickerdoodles

24 Jun

The latest bunch of Bettas are doing great, living happily and harmoniously. I call all eight of them the Snickerdoodles, thanks to M1 for this name suggestion. Or should I say they were doing great. Three days ago, hubby told me one of them has been bullied. How did he know?

It was blinded in one eye! Oh dear. Another one-eyed Jack in the making. Why is it they always go for the eyes? The most vulnerable point to attack?

So Snicker #1 is blind in one eye but physically still okay. Thankfully the rest are still intact but we don’t know how long it will be like this. We will have to monitor because when one is injured, the territorial trait becomes more prominent and soon, the inhabitants may pose a danger to each other.

A Lively Bunch

17 May

It’s heartwarming to see these fellas swim so lively every time I walk up the stairs to pass the little aquarium. And when I peer at them, they would all swim to the front of the aquarium as if to greet me unlike the previous few who has gone to pet heaven.

We have yet to name them but M1 did suggest ‘Snickerdoodle’. Maybe I will just call all of them ‘the Snickerdoodles’!

Payback Time?

9 May

How can one be king of the ‘hood against eight? And being a blind one too? What chances would it have to call the shots and live on without fear? Bobinsky initially thought it could take over Svetlana’s role but the newbies would not have it.

It was a gruesome sight on Saturday morning. Bobinsky’s lifeless body was pecked, injured and scarred. There was no chance it could survive especially when it adopted that gangster attitude and bullied the others instead of welcoming them. Payback time? Goodbye Bobinsky, you’re in a better place now.

Newbies

5 May

When I got back from my weekend escapade, I discovered we have newbies in the little aquarium! Yay. HobNob’s did not make it and Bobinsky now has new friends.

And hubby said that it is Bobinsky who has been the culprit all this while, taking over Svetlana’s (Russian killer) role and bullying the newbies. Blind and still able…

Let’s hope this does not go on and it will be a happy environment without further mishaps. I have to discuss with M2 on their names. So many of them!
