A Birthday and A Blundstone

20 Jan

Monday was a good day. Two significant things happened; one being my parcel from Blundstone arrived from Tasmania, Australia when I least expected it. What can I say? Customer service at its best here. Thank you!

The second being my M1 turned 18 years old.

Gosh. Wasn’t it just yesterday I was seated at the sofa in mom and dad’s home watching Mulder and Sculley in action in yet another weekly X-Files TV show? Then I had my contractions. Uh-oh… It’s time.

The next thing I knew, I was at the hospital, ready to welcome my firstborn. Scared, excited, anxious, nervousness all rolled in. Hubby was like, “Don’t breathe that in!”

That, being the laughing gas. I was in too much pain then to curse him and passed the point for an epidural (I did, cursed him that is, the second time around when M2 came along). Then wham, bam, kabam, we became parents to a 3.04kg bundle of joy. Wow.

The last 18 years has been a roller coaster ride. The many emotions felt dealing with a very strong minded child… yet despite the challenges, we have been very blessed with a very smart child.

All grown up now and ready for college and the world. I can just feel another white hair readying itself to sprout out from my crown…

Okay enough, I am going bawl my eyes out.

The parcel arrived!

The parcel arrived!

So exciting!

So exciting!

Happy birthday to you!

Happy birthday to you!

Of Birds and Boobs

1 Aug

The girls always enjoyed the theory of how M2 came about. Whenever nostalgia hits, I would tell them that I always thought M2 was going to be a boy, simply because I was having pregnancy symptoms that differed from when I was carrying M1. It was typical to plan for a boy and a girl to complete the ideal Asian family unit.

But throughout the whole 9 months, I was coughing non-stop, it was so taxing on my body. I would shake and vibrate from top to toe when the coughing fits occur. When the day finally came for M2 to arrive, I’d like to believe the force and frequency of the coughing resulted in the little pecker dropping off and we have M2 as what she is instead.

Questions must be going through your minds whether we had scanned and determined the sex of the baby. Probably not…

It’s a bundle of joy nonetheless as I figured teaching two girls subsequently about the facts of life will be so much easier; after all, same sex, one lesson! Piece of cake.

Memory does not serve me well what I taught M1 when she hit puberty; I think I groveled through. As you know, M2 is 12 this year and just hitting puberty. With physical changes coming along, the birds and the bees lesson has to be revisited.

One night, M2 asked, “Mummy, if you have big boobies, they are called boobs, right?”

I nodded and mumbled, “Yep…”

“So I have small ones, do you call them the same?” my innocent child wanted to know.

M1, at the side, said, “No. Like ducks, small duckies are called ducklings, so your small boobies are booblings!”

!!!!!!…. Did I say that????

Gimme the Gas!

30 Jun

As we celebrate M2’s 12th birthday today, memories of her birth suddenly comes flooding back. The excitement and anticipation are a blur but I recall throughout the pregnancy, I was coughing really bad. But the minute she popped out, the coughing stopped. Strange.

I also remember the pain being super unbearable, as if someone was chopping my lower back with a hatchet non-stop. And I remember the gas! The minute the nurse asked if I wanted it (as I opted not to take the epidural), I was like, “Gimme the gas NOW!”

The gas mask reminded me of M1’s birth; she arrived 11 days ahead of her EDD and both hubby and I were not in time to be up-to-date on our birthing process homework, rushing to the hospital right after the end of ‘The X-Files’.

Out of ignorance, he warned me not to use it and this resulted in me having so much pain, I cursed him all the way. This time around with M2, heck with it, I am inhaling, big time.

By the time the gynae came around, man, I was so high on the happy gas (pethidine), I was delirious! I kept counting my fingers, and proclaimed I was fine, which thankfully was a good thing for M2 came into our lives without a hitch.

Our babies may come into this world with so much pain but the joy they give us is priceless.
